Subject: | Europa Classic fuel filler pipe |
Graeme
I have just had made and fitted an aluminium filler pipe on my Classic,
partly because of the smell, but also because I prefer the filler pipe
on top and don't want to change to the side filler. My inspector, and
another inspector said that they did not think this was a mod but to let
Francis know anyway. I did that and was told that it was a mod, so I
have now got 8 pages of form to fill in and a bill for =A345!
However Francis did say that if it was approved he would clear it on an
'all aircraft' basis so that other aircraft can use it too without
making reference to him. When I have clearance I will let you (and
others through the Matronics site) know and give details and a drawing
to you and our mods rep so that he can give it to anyone else who wants
it. Incidentally it saves 1 lb of weight.

Graham,
I once had a long talk with Craig about a possible prop for the Europa.
He had some interesting ideas, suggesting that the ideal configuration
would be a two blade design and thought that variable pitch was
unnecessary.
When you listen to him describe the variables, you begin to realise what
skill prop design is.
He started as a teenager and designed and built his own micro-light long
before "micolights" had been invented. Here's an interesting old
documentary featuring Craig and his flying machine filmed some 30 years
ago. Look out at about 3.17

Graham,
Thanks much for the link to these videos. Back in the foot launching
mid-70s, I was flying a Mac 101 powered Icarus II w/ a 22" prop from
John Moody turning over 7000 rpm w/ flight ops limited to the low
temps. of midwinter. I then built an Easy Riser and added a PSRU...w/
a slower turning 48" prop, I could fly year round.
While on a trip to LA, I tracked down Craig Catto in his garage and
was amazed to find this audacious 16 yr. old carving propellers...he's
certainly come a long way. About a year ago, I exchanged some emails
w/ him about a Europa prop, perhaps in collaboration w/ Paul
Lipps...alas, nothing's come of it as yet. Glenn Crowder is flying his
Sube-powered Classic w/ a 3 bladed Catto prop which Glenn is quite
pleased with.
Craig has some reassuring thoughts about FP vs. CS props, particularly
where weight is a consideration.

Hi! Paul ..............sorry can't miss this one!.............at least you
have a wife! Has she a sister by any chance?......better suffer the
indignity and be thankful!...Mine didn't have a problem other than when I
was sanding down and "graded grains" started getting in the house ....so
long as I didn't expect her to fly in it! ....still, she has to have it now
....with the angels bless her. BTW some negligee material makes good peel
ply if you are "stuck"!
Regards
Bob Harrison

Hi Paul
I know you jest:
"That would be a bit like using her negligee for peel ply."
For what it's worth I garbage picked a few thousand foot roll 18' wide of white
brazier material (could be negligee material) in the late 1970s. It was laying
on the flood when there was a mini flood and the very edge got a bit of brown
on it, so it became mine after it was deemed of no use to neighbor that was
a female apparel mfg. I have used it extensive for many things including internal
structures for hot air balloons, covers, drop cloths and many weird projects.
One day I decided to use it as peel ply (when I ran out) on the Europa project
and it seemed to work great. I laid up several subsequent layers on the cockpit
to fuse.
OH NO! Subsequent layers did not stick very well?
I am not sure exactly why, but obvious there was some sort of coating that came
off that prevented subsequent bonding.
Anyway user beware of using other than peel ply meant for composite layup.
