Subject: | Re: Blocked fuel filter |
Thanks for the advice.
I already use a Mr Funnel when fuelling the aircraft. The simplest solution is
to replace the filter(s) with an alternative. I already asked LAA for advice
on this. Preference is for a filter which can be inspected pre-flight without
dismantling.
My experience with a DA20 Katana was not good - a 912 that refused to shut down
(mags off, keys out, fuel cock off, throttle closed).

John

Subject: | Re: fuel pressure problem, urgent |
a brief update:
yesterday I got my Europa back as repaired.
They said they test flyed it and everything has been OK.
My attempt ended after 3 minutes with an other forced landing.
(Looks like I'm getting used to it).
I went angry and together with an mechanic of the workshop we tried to localize
the prob step by step.
The fuel pressure was sometimes good, sometimes to low and sometimes just not existent,
without having changed anything.
After tree hours we suddenly had nearly no pass through the hose from the electrical
fuel pump to the mechanical pump.
The hose is "delaminating" on the inside and is so more or less affecting the fuel
flow. This inconsistency of the blockage made it that hard to understand.
Now I have got an question concerning the choice for the right tube.
The builder used half the way a rubber tube which is coated with stainless steel
fabric. This hose is followed by a rubber hose with a thicker wall (that goes
through the firewall ).
I myself hate those many useless junctions between different hoses, not knowing
what they are good for.
Is there a good reason why I cant use the "stainless steel" hose from the tank
all the way to the mechanical pump?
Hope you could understand what I'm trying to say in my poor English.
Juergen

Juergen=2C
I don't think anyone ever had that kind of a problem before. Is there not a
n engine/airframe logbook from the previous owner ? It should have informat
ion about fuel hose changes.Anyway=2C many owners use fuel injection hose f
rom your local autoparts store=2C 6 or 8mm internal diameter as needed. For
get about the steel braiding. Replace at least all sections which have the
same type as the defective hose. It is quite easy.

I have been looking at some of the things people have done for the bulging doors.
I had mine done real nice then I installed new door locks. I had to pull
off the Cabin width MOD from inside the door. I pull the locks on and glued the
MOD panel back in place. The wrong thing to do. Then installed my window.
I should of placed in back on the fuselage so it would take that shape.
I now have a bulging door. Mal Maclure apparently made some wedges that help.
Anybody know how to do the wedges?

Kingsley Hurst does. He is pretty busy at the moment, but I'll try and flush him
out of hiding. As I recall it was interlocking triangular wedges. The door "FRAME"
one, midway along the bottom horizontal edge has its vertical face inwards,
and a reciprocal one on the outside of the door has its vertical face outwards.
He simply pulled the door in at the bottom of its travel, mated the two
surfaces, and then eased the door down, then shut it. They were only small, about
8 mm high, as I recall, but I saw them about 10 years ago. Kingsley has seen
them more recently.
Now, can someone tell me why the door tangs don't finish square with the hinge
line??

Rick,
I checked with John Lawton before I started painting and he said he used just 2
gal. He is a professional, paints airplanes as part of his business. I am into
my second gal and am not quit half done, I have had to do some repainting.
Difference between an experienced painter and a learning painter. I will be
into the 3rd gal. That's not considering clear coat if you have that in mind.

Hi Rich
I made some stainless pin and strikers for center of door. Easy to do and works
great. Details on page 3:
http://www.europaowners.org/forums/gallery2.php?g2_itemId=29082&g2_page=3
I opted to leave gas strut in original position and install a pin and striker in
upper aft area. Probably on page two and three. Works well along with CF stiffening.
When you close door it pushes down on the upper aft portion of the door!
Tangs can't be parallel with hinge line because of curvature of fuse.
See page 1, 2 and 3 for mutilation of that area with great results and minimal
gap.

Rick,
I haven't had any problems with my doors but I made the attached auxiliary
latchs for the doors because it seemed a good idea at the time.
They are made of Tufnol and are 25mm long. If Neville Eyre is lurking . .
they are 1" long.
Note that the door part latches over the sill part on the inside face.
Hope this helps
Kingsley

Because this was left as an exercise for the builder !! IOW, the factory
stuffed up.
They can't be square with the hinge line Tony but the geometery can be
corrected. See attached.
