Roger,
I have a Champion oil filter from factory on my 914 which is
octagonal in shape (that is not having a smaller hex drive on 'top') and
cannot shift it. I need to half-fill it to inaugurate the oil system. Can
one still get a 3"+/- hex wrench to fit it or can I use some sort of heat
treatment to make it lose its grip? I understand later versions have an
easier method of rotating.....
Cheers, Ferg

William,
I have an alternator mounted to the vacuum pad. It is supposed to be rated around
40 amps but in this installation it probably is rpm limited to around 25 amps.
Nothing to sneeze at considering the Rotax alternator is rated at 15 amps
and you don't want to run it at that output for very long. Consequently, I
use the vacuum pad alternator as my primary electrical source for the aircraft.
Only 25 hours on it so far, but it as performed flawlessly.
You can see pictures on my Europa Owners gallery. Some overall pics of the package
under "Mods and other hardware things -- 2nd Alternator Kit." This kit was
purchased from Flight Crafters (Bob & Russ) about a year after I received the
Europa Kit and I don't believe they sell these any more.
Looking at the specs for the B&C unit, I don't see why it wouldn't work just as
well as long as you have the accessory drive gear on your gearbox. I have used
great quantities of B&C equipment on Little Toot Sport Biplanes I have helped
build in the past and I plan to use a lot of their equipment on the Toot I
am presently building for myself.
I'll be happy to dig up or take pictures of my installation if you would like.

Bob Borger

I have one. If you go that route, I would recommend you to split your
battery into two smaller ones, so you have two totally independent
electrical systems. This gives total redundancy, if you fry one system
you still have the other. Logically you have to distribute your
appliances wisely over the two independent buses to get the most out of
this redundancy.
Keep in mind though that this alternator on the Rotax starts generating
power only at 2500 rpm or above. below that it consumes 4 amps for the
field but doesn't produce anything in return. It really starts to come
alive at 3000 rpm or more.
Make sure to order the short version of this alternator. And note that
you can't use the Rotax factory shroud in combination with this alternator.

Hi,
In the Final Inspection Checklist (Annex E (T)) on page 5 'Aircraft
back on ground-cowlings removed' it says - "Check addition of rudder
pedal return spring plate CS30 for furthest forward rudder pedal".
I can't find any reference to this part CS30 in the build manual. I
would appreciate any information to solve the mystery of the missing
part.
Regards John

John,
The classic and very early XS had an extension on the rudder pedal
return spring in Chapter 22 on the pilot side. That has since be
superseded. (Frankly, I don't even have the pages for that any longer
in my shop.) If you have a post 97 XS you should not have a CS30.
