My engine, a 914 is a 2004 model, and still sits in its new box. I bought it a couple of years ago and am wondering about what advice people would recommend in relation to maintaining its integrity, and maybe modding it at the same time. I wish to get it serviced by my local Rotax dealer, to inspect and protect it. A work colleague who is an ex car mechanic mentioned the crankshaft bearing housings can absorb moisture and corrosion can therefore occur. Not sure if this sort of concern is applicable to my engine, but in essence that is like an engine rebuild. What should I consider doing? Lastly, if it did need the block being split, is there a metal coating I could have applied, even paint, that would stop that "corroded look" some engines develop as they get older??' Thanks Tony Renshaw Sydney Aussie.

Hi Steve, A few comments: 1. Regarding max take off weight: French registered homebuilts which are built from a kit are not allowed to deviate from max weights specified by the kit manufacturer. So there is no way we could exceed the 1370 lbs max weight of the XS, unless the Factory (not the LAA) publish a relevant technical bulletin and gets the weight increase approved by our DGAC. 2. Regarding max baggage load: the 80 lbs is questionable. Is it just an indication for those who do not want to make the balance calculation or is there an actual structural reason? In my XS mono with my wife as a passenger and full fuel, I can load up to 60 kgs (130 lbs) of bags before exceeding the aft limit and still being below 1370 lbs. 3. Baggage arm: according to the XS manual, the arm for baggage is 88 inches. In my opinion this figure is wrong. I consider the right arm to be around 94 inches and does all my balance calculations using this figure. 4. Long range fuel tank: with the long range tank full (mine takes 38 liters) I can still load up to 30 kgs (80 lbs) of bags before exceeding the weight or balance limits. Obviously fuel is not baggage, so I consider I am still legal doing this, as I do not exceed the specified max baggage load. I will pass over to you other comments I eventually collect. =?Windows-1252?Q?ervice=3F=3F=3F? Tony, In my 914 handbook it talks about the engine being good for undisturbed storage for 12 months only, and it requires you to turn the engine over 3 revs and inspect for corrosion every 6 months thereafter. If those things haven't been done, I guess talking to your Rotax man soonest is the smart move . Hello all, Does anyone know what the gas struts used to support the door s are rated in terms of Newtons or pounds force? I have found a replace ment strut sourced here in the states and need to know what force to hav e them pressurized to. I am thinking around 200N but I would rather not guess. Subject: Navaid servo, full left aileron
    From: "zwakie" <mz@cariama.nl>
Hi list, Today I have replaced my Navaid controlhead with a new Trio EZ Pilot controlhead. All works fine, my Skyforce IIIC is providing all informatn perfectly. I do however have one issue: when engaging the servo, the servo immediately gives me full left aileron. This exact same thing happened with the Navaid controlhead, so as far as I can tell one of the following coild be wrong: A) my Navaid servo is not properly functioning; Trio has offered to look at the servo after I ship itto them (excellent service from Jerry!) B) the PWM wire running from the controlhead to the servo has broke My guess is that scenario B) is what is wrong, because this full aileron issue started after someone has done some work behind the panel. My question to the list: would a broken PWN wire indeed result in a full aileron deflection? Any input is highly appreciated! Hi Erich "Does anyone know what the gas struts used to support the doors are rated in terms of Newtons or pounds force?" When I was working on my doors I measured the force on my new struts. It was around ~ 50Pound (could be in the 45 to 55Pound range). If no one else provides you with the info, I am pretty sure I have it documented at the hangar. Ron Parigoris

The manual states: If the strut becomes too weak for any reason, re-pressurization must be done with specialist equipment. The correct charge should give a force of 180N (40 lb. force) at room temperature. __________________ Does anyone know what the gas struts used to support the doors are rated in terms of Newtons or pounds force? Erich Here is a copy of a note from Bob Berube and one from Bud Kim Prout and I (Bud) have a US manufacturer that will refill the struts. We need 45 lbs normally as we are now using a thicker window which is heavier than the original glass. 25/04/11 Guys, At Flight Crafters, we use Easy Lift of North America for gas springs www.bansbach.com <http://www.bansbach.com/> part #B333F46-100-300/160N which is an exact duplicate of the Europa Supplied strut. I recently ordered with 2 more pounds pressure 300/165N. Price is around 95.00 each plus shipping. If you need 45 pounds, they can make them up as the normal Europa strut is 30 pounds. Also you can order with or without the valve. Generally they won't recharge if they are over a year old with the recharge cost at 20.00. Bob Berube I hope this helps Ian Rickard G-IANI XS Trigear, 300hours Europa Club Mods Specialist e-mail g-iani@ntlworld.com From: owner-europa-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-europa-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Erich Trombley Sent: 15 August 2011 19:20 Subject: Europa-List: Door struts Hello all, Does anyone know what the gas struts used to support the doors are rated in terms of Newtons or pounds force? Thanks all for the quick turnaround. Easy Lift is the manufacture I sou rced as well. I have been dealing with Damion. Easy Lift have a new li ne called their Quick Ship line which they are introducing at a substant ial discount, cost of $50 each with steel ball end fittings. The part n umber is QS-15-120-001-XXXN for the strut with valve and J3,M5 for the b all end. Because the struts have an adjustment valve I will play it saf e and order 200N (45lbs) as some folks I have heard from indicated they wished they would have gone a little higher than the 180N.
