Subject: | Mode S transponders ? |
What is the current position on Mode S in the UK.
Is it still March 2012 or is it the case that we only need this if
flying in controlled airspace (or Europe) and if so what is deemed to be
controlled airspace (ie: what class of airspace). Some sources are
suggesting it is only the London TMA and parts of the Edinburgh/
Glasgow.
Can somebody point in the direction of a SIMPLE explanation of the
current position.
Looks like a case of having to spend =C2=A31,500 minimum to upgrade from
the current Mode C setup. It=99s a Terra unit who I believe are
out of business (so no chance of an upgrade)
Cost of these units doesent seem to be reducing so is there any point in
waiting.

Hi Jim,
Sounds like you are getting close! The big reference is the FAA Advisory Circular
90-89A. Our EAA Flight Advisor gave us additional handouts and testing suggestions.
We used all of this to develop our plan and made a set of test cards
for each flight, one for the person on the ground and an abbreviated set for
the pilot. Unfortunately, we don't have them in electronic format, but if you'd
like, we can bring the hard copies we used to Rough River.

We need the dimensions of the tail plane mass balance weight (outside diameter,
inside diameter & approximate length).
Thanks

Doesn=99t exactly answer my question but makes it clear that after
December 2011 my transponder (Terra 250D) won=99t be visible to
many traffic control services.

I suspect many of us already flying will have the same problem (and
possibly some still building)
Not so much the case that we have to fit the transponders but that what
we have fitted won=99t work anymore. (ie: cannot be interrogated
by ATC).

The CAA Websire link is here

and the PDF document in the UK AIP is here

Jim
My original weight was 4 3/4 x 2 and 60 ozs. Centre hole needs
clearance for the 1/2 shaft.
My finished weight 3 1/2 and 45 ozs.
