Hi Guys,
My solution to repair and improve the Naca vents was to remove the shut off system,
make a fiberglass conduit and install adjustable aluminium vents.
Works fine. See attached pics.

I used copper clad aluminium wire and built an aluminium support for the
rear mounted batteries but the overall weight was certainly less than 3 lbs.
C of G turned out to be perfect. I have a 2-bladed CS prop, 914,
intercooler, second alternator, and a loaded instrument panel.

We are regularly overflying Belgium (and always announcing in the flight
plan and to Brussels info that aircraft type is EUPA) but never bothered
about it, never got even the slightest hint that we should obtain a
special permit and never heard of any other Dutch pilot who payed 80 Euro's.

Hi Remi,
Nice looking job!
This is a very similar solution to ours. This works well and is a good
adaption of an appallingly unacceptable piece of expensive rubbish.
In the UK we would define this product as 'unfit for purpose' and as such
should be outlawed. (but I suppose it is still being sold)

Hi All,
My mono came in at 860 pounds and with the battery in the rear I needed 4 lb
of lead in the tail. I have since mved it further back to the post that
holds the counter balance. I also used CCA cable which was less than 2
pounds.

Mine too broke first time used them. Here is the repair which I did - now b
een working for 8 years without problems.
1) take a cs machine screw - like the longer ones used to attach the cowlin
g.
2) countersink one of the large penny washers and attach the screw so you n
ow have a machine screw with a large flat head. I think I welded and ground
mine; araldite 420 might do it.
3) get rid of the plastic screw bit and grind/sand where it attaches to the
vent flat
4) screw the machine screw into the black knob on the vent casing. It will
cut its own thread
5) Put some araldite 420 on the washer/screw head and turn the knob until i
ts is hard against the vent. Let it set and all done.

Subject: | Entry to Belgium and the Channel Islands |
My memory failed me - it was actually Euro 89 that we each had to pay for the Belgian
permit, not "only" Euro 80!
We read about the requirement and found the contact information on the website
of UK's LAA. The response from the Belgian authorities referred to Article 4(2)
of the Royal Decree of 16 March 2009, and listed the various information and
aircraft documents to be submitted. In due course, a "Temporary permission
to fly over Belgian territory" arrived, and some months later, the invoice arrived
(the fee was mentioned up-front, though).
Far from wanting to teach anyone anything, let me just say that filing a flight
plan does not in itself give permission for anything, not even as far as conducting
the flight as intended (clearances must be obtained along the route).
Air traffic control and bureaucratic matters are two different issues. The ATC
does not check whether the pilot is qualified to command the aircraft, or whether
the aircraft is airworthy, before e.g. giving clearance for entry into controlled
airspace. They assume that the pilot is "legal", the aircraft airworthy
and other papers are in place, and take it from there.
We were well aware of the common practice of not applying for a permit to fly along
the Belgian coast, but decided that we would rather pay the cost of the permit
than the price of not having one in case we had to land in Belgium for some
reason or became involved in an incident, when the authorities might ask questions.
We may fly as birds, but in this modern time and age we are far from as free as
birds when we fly.
Regards,
Svein

Frans, Absolutely - you can get away with it, as I have on many occasions
with many other Europa friends. However extensive correspondence with the
Belgian CAA both by our LAA and personally has them insisting that it is
necessary to seek permission before flying a home built through Belgian
airspace. I only sought permission on one occasion when I was entering the
Dawn to Dusk Challenge and vesting all of Wellington's battle sites, and for
that you are required to sign to say that you have not broken any
regulations. The bill for 80+ euros was an unpleasant surprise! which I am
fighting. You have to assume that the FPL people and air traffic have better
things to do than sort through the small print of the regulations, but quite
what would happen if you have an 'incident' is another matter!
