I don't have a solution for you but thanks for the heads up. Just checked mine and found that the O rings were perished. I mention it for the benefit of those whose connectors are nearly as old as mine and in the faint hope that someone out there has found a solution to this problem. > Regards, David Joyce, G-XSDJ > ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 05:01:31 AM PST US Subject: Europa-List: Re: pitot/static connectors From: "h&jeuropa" Hi David, We have found that you can purchase new o-rings in the plumbing section of a hardware store. And an application of silicon grease helps keep them supple. From: "h&jeuropa" Hi Kevin, We've been using SkyCharts Pro for a year and a half and really like it. Not as many bells & whistles as ForeFlight but less expesnive. Gives updates for all the charts and approach plates for $20 / year. No flight planning but does give a magenta line and shows your position, nearest airports, ETA, etc. TFRs, METARs & TAFs show when connected to WIFI (or as of last connection if you enable it). We use NavMonster for flight planning. The winds forecast showing headwind / tailwind and the predicted flight time is great! It's at www.navmonster.com We have XM weather on our EFIS. The $35 / mo package is adequate for our needs, and you can suspend it for months when you won't be flying and restart with no additional fee. Unwittingly I chamfered the rear bearing's hole, thinking that it had to be seated against the flange like the front bearings. Then I realized the flange does not sit flush against the rear bearings like the front ones. There is no major issue here, except the chamfering reduces the contact area with the tube. My guess is the contact area is reduced by at most 25%, possibly less. It doesn't seem to have any adverse effects or play right now, but I am concerned if this might get worse with wear. I haven't bonded these bearings in place, so right now it would be a trivial task to replace them. After bonding, it would be nearly impossible. I asked the Europa office to send me some extra bearings, but I have not heard anything back. I was wondering what your thoughts are, and if this is worth worrying about. ________________________________ Message 5 _____________________________________ Time: 06:50:31 AM PST US From: Christoph Both Subject: RE: Europa-List: Rear tufnol bearings Replace the bearing is the easiest and the right thing to do. You want an airplane you feel great about in every building aspect when you hold short of the runway for your first flight, and many years ahead. Very cheap and easy to use, providing moving map with elevation inputs and VACs (for France and GMY) and METARs and NOTAMs plus HSI and route and nearest fields... The only bad point is that you need to keep the GSM running on the iPhone and it may ring and perturbate your instruments... By the way iPad is a bit too large during landing and take-off to sit on knees, and not easy to fix on the panel. Any solution out there? Have a look at the wing. The aircraft hit a tree in the approach to Bogota in a place called Bojaca from the south west - you can find it on google maps. In addition the aircraft has a big dent on the spinner and lost an main gear leg. It appears that the aircraft was descending through a hole in the cloud over bojaca and accidentally came up against a mountain of which there are lots in Colombia. The aircraft hit a tree making the substantial hole in the left wing loosing the fuel tank and main gear leg. The pilot as soon as he saw the tree applied full power and had the presence of mind to switch tanks. Now here is the remarkable thing. The aircraft bounced off the top of the tree and flew in this state to our base in Guaymaral SKGY which is about 15 minutes flying time and landed coming to rest obviously on the left wing. Not a mark on the prop. I settled on the Illusion strobe from the US (mostly used for ultralights), the only one that will fit, and this is powered directly from the Rotax 912 magneto generator, which supplies 12V AC. I am told it has an exceptionally bright flas. The strobe power box is wired in series between the 912 generator wires (yellow) and the Ducati voltage rectifier. Also, strangely, there is no circuit breaker or fuse in this system. Has anyone installed an Illusion AC system before, or similar? Are there problems, does it blow the rectifier? The supplier assures me this is a common installation with 912 engines, and there are no problems.
