Subject: | Spar socket failure (article in the clubmagazine) |
Hi all,
recently I received the CM where I found an article about possible failure of the
wing spar sockets on Europas. It was mentioned by the author, that the last
thing to be done is to push in the main wing pin half way (as per the Europa
manual) and then release the left wing same applies for the right wing.
As my Europa lives in a closed trailer at home and I transport it to the aerodrome
whenever I want to fly this item is of great interest for me.
Question: what is the correct method for rigging? I cannot see anything wrong in
going with the manual and what is the alternative? When I push in the main wing
pin completely, its impossible to fully slide the starboard wing in. In that
case I first have to pull the pin out a little.
I also cannot imagine it as a good idea to rely on the pip pin outside alone to
take the whole loads/shocks when sliding the port wing in, especially when the
port wing is not fitted totally in line with everything (which is always the
case as you know) and contacts e. g. the edges of the spar socket of the port
wing. I dont know about you but I always have to surge push and pull forward
and back up and down a little especially the last few inches and I have a better
feeling when as much as possible is already fixed on the other side of the
aircraft.
Those questions becoming even more important since I bought myself a rigging aid
for single hand rigging.
Any advice most welcome.

Hi Roland,
I have just re read the article in the Europa Flyer and I think you may
be miss understanding what is written. You read =9Cthe very last
thing to be done is to push in the main wing pin half way=9D. In
fact what it actually said is =9Cthe very least that should be
done is to insert the main wing pins half way=9D.
In case this leaves any doubt just follow what the Operators Handbook
says.
I hope this clears up any misinterpretation.
Regards
Pete Jeffers

Roddy / Graeme,
I believe that I've found the stainless tubing offcut that I used for this. Can
you remind me of the ID and OD so that I can measure it and check. I do remember
having to turn one diameter down on a lathe but I can't remember which one.
Regards,
Phil

I also rig the airplane for every flight. I have the socket entirely
potted in, with a few layers of bid soaked in araldite over it, after it
came loose before I even reached flying stage. Never had any problems
since. I always push the pins halfway in before rigging the starboard wing.

Phil,
>From the Mod PDF:
Stainless Tube (0.375outsidediameter,0.3125insidediameter) The inside of the stainless
tube is the critical dimension so that it provides a sliding fit for the
AN5 bolt. A slightly larger outer diameter is acceptable which will require
a larger hole in the OR1.

If you can use it I have bunches of Chrome Molly tube 10 x 1,0 = 0,393 OD x 0,315
ID.
Free of charge for these little bits.

Hi Roland. What type of rigging aid did you purchase? I am thinking of going the
solo rigging route, any other's out there with ideas on the best way to do this?
Martin.
