Hi Everyone,
I'm fairly new to my Europa, only logged a handful of hours, and there is
one flying characteristic that's bothering me a bit.
* Just pilot in LH seat
* Aileron trim is set to full right
* Feet not touching the pedals
* ASI speed about 116 knots
* Balance ball on the left, just over a 'whole ball's distance
So...
* I step on the ball, applying some left rudder.
* Then i change the aileron trim, as full right no longer appropriate
* ASI Speed now slowly climbs about 3 knots to 119.
This tells me, with the higher airspeed, that my balance ball is accurate
and to get the aircraft in balance I need left rudder. What's bugging me
is how much left rudder, it's a fairly substantial pressure, enough to make
my left foot feel irritated after 10/15 minutes.
The question is - why does the aircraft need some left rudder to keep
balance? Is there anything i can adjust/correct to make it naturally
balanced so i can take my feet of the pedals?
Thanks in advance,
Regards,
-Carl.

Hi Craig,
Unless I am mistaken, you will find that the build manual includes a return
spring extension arm as standard on the LHS.

I had similar issue on mine, I just went and bought a slightly shorter
higher rated spring set,
mind you I also have the turn buckle adjustment in the cables near the
rudder for the tail wheel mod,
so it made fixing the length easy.

Hi guys, I'm installing the starboard return spring & there clearly is'nt
enough 'footwell' to mount the spring under any tension. Is it ok to fit a
small extension piece ( 1/2 in aluminium?) to extend the spring approx 3 in
into the engine bay space? is there a 'mod' for this? Thanx for your help

Hi Carl,
What do the flaps look like? Are they raised to equal positions?
My mono needed a little left rudder in cruise, so I added a fixed aluminum t
rim tab to the rudder.

Hi Carl,
As Kevin suggested, check flap rigging. Then check aileron rigging. If you feel
up to it, check the engine offset to make sure it's within specs (Europa XS
Rotax 912S or 914 Engine Installation Manual, Chapter 1, Engine Installation).
If everything is where it's supposed to be, then it looks like a tab is needed
on the rudder.
Perhaps Bud can chime in with some additional suggestions.

The flaps certainly look level and balanced=8A but it depends how much
accuracy you need :)
The trim tab sounds like a good idea =AD what's the best way to affix this?

Had a sudden panic that I had unnecessarily opened up the lower cowl starboard
NACA duct and that it was only required for 914 inlet and not my 912. I cant see
what its for for the 912ULS as it would only cool the oil tank (which is already
too cool in flight) and possibly one end of the exhaust.
Is it necessary, has anyone filled it in?

Terrific pictures.
How does the fuel system work with the additional four
tanks ? Pumped to main tank or one to the other ?

Greame,
Unfortunately, you are correct. That duct is only for the 914 intake air. It
should probably be closed up. A couple of layers of BID laid up on the inside
with at least 1 inch of overlap onto the cowl should do. Then fill the outer
and sand to smooth and match the cowl. Prime and paint. You should be OK.

Greame,
Further to what Bob Borger just suggested: I have done some other small
mods on my lower cowl, and discovered after some operating hours that the
bid/epoxy layups turned dark brown on the inside and the nice, white paint
turned light brown on the outside! Those at Europa Aircraft at that time
told me the reason for this: Epoxy does not stand up to heat as well as
polyester does, and the cowls are therefore made of bid/polyester.
If someone with better knowledge/better memory can confirm this, you should
use polyester with suitable bid to cover the duct inlet.
Note: There has been no separation of the epoxy-based layups from the
factory-made cowl in my case, so it is only cosmetic.

Svein

Hi Carl,
I had a similar thing on mine although I added a balsa Flettner strip
(like the ones either side of the stab trim/anti-servo tab) but on one
side of my rudder (rather than a tab sticking out) and that did the
trick. I painted it to match the rest of the rudder after determining
the size needed. I have a similar one on the underside of the right side
aileron. I do notice that when I carry a passenger I have to hold in a
little left aileron as I didn't have any kind of aileron trim.
You can just see the rudder trim strip at the 40 second point of the
YouTube video.

Hi there and thanks for your replies. So my understanding is, that there are no
concerns about following the manual ("inserting the main wing pins about 1.....").
@ Pete: in fact that was what I (miss)understood - time to book some English-lessons.
@Frans: good idea to focus on that special item during the built. When I have to
fix that one day after several rigging, I'll get in contact to you later on
for some advice.
@Martin: I have my rigging aid from Christoph Jtte from Austria (0043263925196/c.juette@diamond-air.at)
who is well known in the sailing community for many years.
Good service, price and quality in my opinion, plus it's a lightweight as
it's completely Aluminium. But it's no real company (like Cobra for instance),
just a "one man show". If you need any further details, you can also contact
me off-list.
