Hi Max,
I replaced my first set of brushes after 266 hours. They were found to be about
80 percent worn out. Now I have 272 hours on those brushes, so I am planning
to replace them again right now, so that I do not get into trouble during the
summer season.

Hi All,
Another interesting failure mode of the brush system occurred to me
at about 290 hours. I had a tiny (very tiny) oil leak from the hydraulic
hose fittings at the oil pump assembly. (I had replaced the clunky, inaccurate
VDO sensor with a mil-spec transducer mounted on the fire-wall).
The negative direction airflow around the gear box deposited the oil film
on slip ring plate where, mixed with the carbon dust, it shorted out the
rings and failed the controller. The allowed a transient overspeed
condition on takeoff power. Wiping the plate with a rag fixed the condition
and tightening the connectors fixed the leak.
Motto: No good deed goes unpunished

Ira,
Was the controller trashed or just a fuse ?
Steve.

Dear Bob,
do you remember how much the MT brushes protrude out of the box ie. what
is the lenght of the unsupported brush part = the cap between slip
rings and a brush box brush side ?
I my case (just what happen to be in my Rotax & Airmaster combination)
this measure is about 1 mm or even less. I think then it is no matter if
brushes are a bit =9Ctrailing=9D,
=9Cstraight=9D or even =9Cleading=9D.
They will anyway soon worn out to totall slip ring contact.
Cheers, Raimo

Hi! Svein ,
I would still prefer to measure the actual angles and especially prove
them to be =9Ctrailing =9C

Hi Bob,
Appreciate your comments regarding correct installation of the brushes
relative to the rings.
My Airmaster was delivered with a brush bracket for Rotax 912ULS. The
holes matched exactly the holes on the left side of the gearbox, and the
distance to the slip rings looks right (small unsupported length of the
brushes sticking out, yet clearance to avoid the bracket touching the
rings).

Svein

Hi! Raimo
First off ....how is that little girl?
I hope now home and happy?
If my memory serves me right I think the block was 0.0025=9D
clear of the slip ring, but with any slack in the propeller assembly
must be pushed back for worst case scenario.
Trailing , leading or straight provides differing brush loads ....
Leading being the heaviest and hence more wear more quickly.
