      Hi,

I'm thinking of changing my fuel sender to a solid state one from here:

      http://shop.airworlduk.com/airworld-solid-state-fuel-level-gauge-and-12-bend
      able-probe-300717-1001-p.asp

Unfortunately I forgot to measure the depth of the tank! Does anyone know
how deep the tank is, what length probe I need to buy?

Also, does anyone have any experience using a capacitive solid state fuel
sender, I'm planning on linking it to a Dynon.

      Regards,
      -Carl.

      Hi! Fred.

The No. 6 is the rim diameter which is constant within normal constraints of
manufacturers tolerances. The "600" / "700"/ "800" dimensions are the width
of the tyre. The larger widths need the swinging arm to be appropriately
      formed to accommodate them.

Subject: Europa-List: tire sizes & dimensions

I'm wondering if anyone can direct me to a reference which would describe
      the dimensional differences between the 600 x 6, 700 x 6, and 800 x 6 tires
      for the monowheel.

I've always assumed that the differences in these tires would be variations
in width...but does anyone know if the diameter of these tires (or tyres)
      varies as well?

(Checking back in Chap. 29m of the build manual, I had forgotten that it
mentions the 600 x 6 tire, as I can only recall posts which discussed the
      relative merits of the 700 & 800.)

      Much obliged,

      Fred

      Carl,

I installed the Princeton (? - memory fades..) capacitive sender sold by
Europa when I purchased my kit in 2001, connected to Grand Rapids EIS. Not
happy with the sender, I believe it is very sensitive to type of fuel (mogas
type and producer, 100LL) and possibly other factors.

Have you considered the FP-5 Fuel Totalizer from Electronics International?
      http://www.buy-ei.com/Pages/FP-5/FP-5_Overview.html

I am VERY happy with this instrument. Very accurate (no calibration has
been required), easy to install, easy to use, and has the added value over a
level measurement system that you get read-out of actual fuel flow (uses a
sender also in the return line) in addition to quantity remaining. Great
for optimizing cruise speed. Also other nice features. The only thing you
have to remember is to update the fuel quantity on board after refueling
(you are reminded of this every time you switch on the avionics power).

      Hi Svein,

I'm really not interested in another instrument =AD the Dynon EMS-D10A does
all of that plus more =AD I get live fuel flow, fuel level, litres used,
litres remaining. The only problem with my current setup is the float
sender =AD it only seems to reliably read between 20litres and 48 litres,
anything more or less than that doesn't register. Also, it really bounces
around in certain situations like a prolonged climb where it under-reads
      terribly.

The Dynon totals up the fuel used, but it's not infallible =AD for example if
I put a jerry can into the system and forget to update the level count, or
if the fuel flow meter goes wrong. I'm looking for redundancy so I can
cross check litres used with the litres left in the tank. I like to have
the sight tube (unreliable below about 30 litres), plus the totaliser, plus
      a level readout.

This became important just recently when we had a small "fuel crisis" panic
buying in the UK. All the mogas ran out, and my only option was to fly to
      a
field with avgas. Fuel was low, so I emptied a few litres from various
jerry cans, and I had to unscrew the sender plate and look into the tank to
check I had enough to safely take off!

A friend runs a capacitance gauge from the link I posted earlier and
believes it to be very accurate indeed. For me, it will serve as one of
three ways to check fuel level.

      Regards,
      -Carl.

      Hi Fred

I have used 700x6 (Air-Trac) for nearly 6 years and I am very happy.

It sits perfect in the swing arm. After 6 years and soon 400 hours the
tire is good as new. I am a bit surprised I may add .

I asked Andy Draper about dimension when I build my plane and he
      recommended 700x6.

800x6 may be too wide. Some builders using 800x6 have to modify the swing
      arm.

      Go for 700x6

      Best regards

      Stephan Cassel

The French Chateau Fly out is scheduled for 21-24
September. and has attracted a lot of interest. Earlier
this year I had a series of computer disasters and not
only my old computer but also the brand new replacement
blew up. In checking through what I have salvaged of the
replies expressing interest, I am concerned that some may
have fallen down the hole in the ether that engulfed my
computers! Can I ask all of you who have previously
expressed an interest to confirm to me now, preferably by
sending a copy of your original email.

      Carl,

We also fitted the Princeton probe initially but found that the differences between
100LL and mogas were a problem. We also found that amount of ethanol or
any moisture in the gas changed the readings significantly.

We ended up using a pressure transducer to measure fuel qty. Copied that portion
of Tony K's fuel quantity solution and it has worked well for several years.
You should be able to find his information here on the forum.

Richard - I have bought a FF1 but it is not yet installed. I'm planning to use
it with a sensor which effectively weighs the fuel, similar to the one promoted
by Tony unpronounceable a few years back. I also have a Floscan flow sensor
for it. Going to try and get away with just one flow sensor as I ave a 912S.

Tim Houlihan uses a similar setup. It had some problems that we think were down
to the vent system affecting the apparent head of fuel above the sensor, but
I think that is sorted out now.

You will find a detailed drawing of the tank on the Club web site
      http://www.theeuropaclub.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/tank2.pdf.

In the position of the standard fuel gauge the tank is approximately 390mm
deep. The idea depth for the fuel gauge would be say 375mm. The europa
supplied part is a 350mm unit (as the 375mm is only available on bulk orders
      from the USA).

A new float gauge unit is now available from Europa which gives 16 levels
(the old one was 8). I have installed one of these with a Dynon Skyview and
      it works well.

I have it and I'm satisfied with it. I use two float type senders, one
swiveling into the main tank and the other in the reserve. I have set up
the two systems as two independant tanks, and of course both are
consumed equally, until the bottom of the "saddle" is reached. This
gives insight when to switch from main to reserve, and also offers some
redundancy during the time the tank level is above the saddle. If both
tanks indicate the same level then all should be well. If one float
sticks or sinks the levels disagree and invite the pilot to investigate.

The fuel flow part also works perfectly. I have a 914 so I have two flow
senders, the FF1 is able to substract the return flow from the total
fuel flow so it gives a very accurate value. What's more: connected to
the ships NMEA-buss it calculates the time and distance remaining on the
      fuel contents.

      Max,
I have to amend my previous post after having checked my brushes today. Surprisingly
they are still protuding 7 to 8 mm from the body of the sensor/brush assembly
after 275 hours. This is to be compared with 12mm when new. So they are
probably good for another 300 hours. This is a great improvement over the original
brushes I had to replace after 265 hours.

Bob - it appears to be your tiscali account that has been hacked - I'd advise you

I am into my annual condition inspection and once again thinking about the useful
life of the outriggers. I have over 10 years of service on them, here in the
northwest they don't get much sun or heat and I store my plane inside for about
6 months of each year. So they look ok and have a slight curve to the rear
from sitting on uneven grass area which pushes up on them somewhat. I recall
a couple of failures over the years but not sure if those were unusual or?
      Thanks for help.

      Thanks for the replies,
I'll going to go with the forward facing vent drilled at the back as this seems

to be what most of you are using with no probs.,

      Thanks,
      Steve.
