I had a different problem - got airborne and the code was rejected. Checked
the code sent by SMS to my cell phone - slightly different. But that was a
ccepted. So check that both codes are the same.

Subject: Europa-List: Flying within the UK Olympic Restricted Zone
Hi all,
I know this is a UK specific problem but I thought it bestto let as many kn
ow as possible.
We have in the UK a 1 month massive restricted area aroundLondon whilst the
Olympics are on.
I have made a few flights under the file a flight plan system(where a text
message is sent accepting the flight plan with an Acceptance Code)all with
no problem, but today was a bit different, and as I have heard ofanother pe
rson suffering exactly the same problem then it is obviouslysomething that
we all need to be aware of.
I made my first flight down to Sandown with no problems, buton the return f
light, when I called up Atlas Control and gave them my AcceptanceCode Numbe
r I was informed that the code was incorrect and I could not enterthe Restr
icted Zone. This continued for some considerable time with no resolveand in
the end I had to accept a diversion to Lydd to file a new flight plan toge
t back to my destination.
Just before I landed at Lydd I was asked to contact AtlasControl and I was
told that it was now ok for me to continue to my originaldestination but to
contact the Supervisor by phone when I landed.
The phone call clarified the problem. Apparently the textmessage is sent by
computer and in my case the computer failed to convert theAcceptance Code
in to an acceptable Code and left it in some sort of machinelanguage. As I
say I have since heard of another example who had exactly thesame code.
So please be aware, if you file a flight plan to fly intothe UK Olympic Res
tricted Zone and receive the following Acceptance Code (mmddcidinit) pl
ease query it as this is a bogus code number.

>From my experience, anything white will keep the cockpit cool and will not cause
damage to the fiberglass skin. Better to have cotton cloth inside to avoid
scratching the perspex and some sort of vinyl outside to prevent the cloth to
absorb water in case of dew or rain.
Personally I am using a homemade cover made of the sort of cloth used to make day
light blocking curtains. It is very effective for keeping the cockpit cool
but is not waterproof.

Subject: | Mono wheel up landing |
For a very brief moment last night I thought my wheel was stuck up. I'll chock
it up and check it all out but I have wondered what the best technique would have
been. I doubt the prop would clear. I guess short grass and as slow on contact
and as much on the tail as possible. Would the prop just smash up or would
it take the engine off?
I guess that a sharpish pitch up would also encourage it down.

Atlas thought they saw a "yellow plane" land near Eaton Bray just in the north
west edge of the zone during yesterday afternoon. First they quizzed the airfeild
manager who came to the strip to quiz me. I'd seen and heard nothing. Then
I flew at around 7:30, on landing 4 police came and questioned me before I had
even climbed out, they put me on the phone to the CAA. Then today another call
from someone else at the CAA. Same questions! the intensity is worrying - levels
of paranoia very high. Everyone pleasant though. We are about 30 miles from
the Olympic Village.
Just cant work out how they saw a yellow plane. The sky is full of gliders from
Dunstable.

Subject: | Re: Mono wheel up landing |
Graeme, If the prop is going round you will break it and
very possibly damage the engine, so if it ever does happen
for real deliberately stop the engine on final approach to
protect the engine, and you just might be lucky and get it
to stop in the one blade up & two down position where you
can hope to avoid breaking the prop too. I once flew
through some rotor in the Welsh mountains and found that
the severe turbulence moved the joint in the gear lever so
that when I came to put the gear down the lever was about
1/4" from the detent. I flew away from the circuit to
consider my options, but found it actually yielded to
main force (pulling hard with my right hand whilst
thumping that hand with my left fist), but two points
worth mentioning:
1) If the plane is still flying properly go away somewhere
and at a safe height do your fiddling. You do not need
serious distractions at circuit height.
2) With time to reflect on it, I realise that it would
have been OK to land with it as far down as it was, as the
gear had reached its stop and the mechanism would have
been over centre, and with a hand on the knob to stop any
impact rattling it out of that position landing would have
been no problem

All this theory is very good, but 2 questions:
1. Why was the cockpit temperature so high? (subjectively measured by
sweating pilots)
2. What do we practical builders and pilots (uneducated in the science of
heat transfer) do to keep our aircraft cool in the sun - i.e. what type of
cover is best?
Thanks in advance,
Paul :-)

Subject: | Heat in the cockpit |
I was interested to read the recent commentary regarding trying various
covers to keep the Europa cockpit cool.
I keep my Europa hangared but I suspect the cockpit temperatures are
likely close to ambient.
I'm attaching an image of our weeks weather from the local TV station.
Note, current temperature reading at 10.30 pm.
Waiting for some cooler weather ....

Subject: | Re: Mono wheel up landing |
I can tell you what happened on an unintended wheels up landing on a runway
in an XS monowheel with a two bladed Whirl Wind prop. Power was at idle and
tail wheel touched down nicely but blades of turning prop had to be replaced
(constant speed hub was OK--blades actually bent over then sprung back!)
Main wheel was forced farther up into the wheel well about two inches but
caused only rubbing damage. Minor damage to port outrigger fairing easily
repaired (no passenger). Main wheel was jammed beyond normal up position
but easily unjammed as aircraft was held aloft by hoist attached to engine
mount. Engine passed sudden engine stoppage tests.
