Subject: | Handheld comm radio |
Just bought this week an Icon IC-A6FR as I had a radio failure during
our
last trip and it was inside a CTR=85
Standard connection to head-set is available in the package. Reception
is
loud and clear (even in the hangar which is the worst situation, much
more
than in the plane). I wasn=92t yet able to experiment deeply the quality
of
the emission as I was alone in the ship but it works fine. I will do it
probably next WE and let you know.

Does anyone have experience (good or bad) with a handheld VHF comm radio
used in the aircraft? I am interested in this option as a second radio
on
board, both in case the installed radio should fail and 'primarily '
as a
means of listening to VFR traffic close to non-towered airports and
air-to-air communication (fairly close range) while still listening to
the
traffic controllers on radio no. 1.
Info on radio, connection to external antenna if any, connection to
headset,
etc., appreciated.

Svein

Jonathan,
I have finally installed the new nylon rods supplied by the factory and have flown
a few hours since without trouble. But because the supplied rods were badly
machined, I had to cut them, then install extensions. So I still consider this
fix as temporary and I am considering alternative solutions using composite
or metal tapered rods.
Other suggestions?

Hi there All,
I'd like to install a fuel flow like FuelScan 450 from JP Instruments.
Has anyone installed that specific instrument? Or installed any other ?
Because of the fuel return line do you think I need to install 2 transducers
like Flow Scan 201

Hi Max,
I installed a jpi fuel flow and did fit two transducers.
I believe you can get away with one. The fuel meter has worked perfectly
for the last three years.

Max,
I have the Electronics International FP-5 fuel totalizer for my 912ULS
installation. If your fuel system is per the Europa manual, you definitely
need return flow transducer (which is optional with the EI totalizer). The
return flow is substantial.
I fitted the feed flow transducer between the engine driven fuel pump and
the right side carb, and the return flow transducer inside the center tunnel
- I have a hatch in the fuselage bottom for access to whatever I have inside
the tunnel.
The system worked right out of the box, with no calibration necessary for
very accurate reading of remaining fuel. Great tool also for fine-tuning
speed vs. fuel consumption at various gross weights.

Svein

Hi Karl!
LowDensityPolyEthelyne (LDPE) as I understand it.
The material requires "fluorination" to become less porous to the fuel and
prevent swelling and cracking.
Cheers,
Pete

Hi Will,
Indeed the tank as received from Europa is Fluorinated, albeit to a lower
level in my tank's case to what I managed to arrange by a US treatment
factory. You can see my request out to the group for interested builders
to share in the expense, but found none so I went ahead and paid their high
minimum lot fee. If there were a bunch of tanks (and cobras) it could have
cost as little as $40/tank. The process is done in a temp/pressure
controlled chamber, and the tank must be free of contaminants to avoid
being damaged in the process.
Mine came back with a 'thick frost' textured finish, and was done to the
same level as the do for the auto industryy to meet the evaporative
emissions requirements.

PS- if anyone endevours to get their tanks done, I'd love to jump into the
order, with a small motorcycle plastic gas tank that I have not yet
installed :-)

oh, forgot to mention, the treatment must be done *after* all cutouts are
complete, as *any* open fresh cut edge will allow the fuel to soak into the
LDPE regardless of the surface treatment. This was made very clear to me by
Fluoro-Seal Int.. This could be one reason why the factory's process is
not very effective - besides the lower-level of fluorination which was used
- at least for my tank circa 2001.
as for the effectiveness - I cannot say, as I still have a pile of parts :-(
Cheers
Pete

Thanks very much for the several replies. It seems to be clear that an
external antenna is required for good transmission, so I will check out the
AAE antenna which Aircraft Spruce sells.
As for the radio, it is interesting to note the FR notation after the type
number on your Icom radio, Max (Icom IC-A6FR). From what I can understand,
this is as special model (or a special package) including a filter which
makes it an approved aviation radio for French registered light aircrafts.
Can you comment on this, Max - my French is not what it used to be (never
was ...).
The French Icom promotion video shows this radio in a cockpit with an
external antenna cable connected - is that your set-up, too, Max? I could
not see that a hand-held mike is available for this radio, though.

Svein

Svein,
That=92s exactly it : the FR extension means that a kit including a
filter is
delivered with the radio and then is approved for in flight use (but I
guess
it=92s more a regulation constraint than physical need). I=92ve not yet
installed an external antenna, I will try first to evaluate what could
be
the distance where I could be heard=85
The kit comes with an additional plug to connect your head-set (mike and
hears) which includes a entry for the emission switch.

Subject: | Re: outrigger legs |
In November my classic mono/tail wheel will be with Neville Eyre in Yorkshire getting
tri-gear fitted, after I have flown it for 15 years with the "heroic" undercarriage.
The time has arrived for me to have fewer challenges while approaching
retirement and approaching runways.
The tri-gear "trainer" wheels will get me used to the idea that some day I may
need to accept being in a wheelchair, which will be okay as long as there's a
pretty nurse to push me.
So I should soon have a pair of outrigger legs to give to a deserving cause around
mid November. The main problem for most Europa mono owners is that the legs
are almost certainly too short, because I still have the original (and best)
direct drive tail wheel under the fin. Subsequent legs were lengthened for aircraft
with the extended tail wheel.
I think it will be almost impossible to remove my wheel forks or the sockets from
the legs, but for the right person with an antique Europa, these legs are very
special, tried and tested in operational extremes, aged and matured like a
fine whisky in our Scottish climate, with a provenance of having been taken to
their operational limits repeatedly by some of the most experienced pilots in
this fair land.
Really they should be listed among the wonders of the world, but I couldn't cope
with such fame by association, so I'll just have to let them go quietly as is
often stated in newspaper classifieds under Pets: "Free to a good home". So
sad, c'est la vie!

I have just fitted the EI FP-5L with two FD-60 sensors (now in the mod thanks Ian
R) seems to be wroking fine. I put the transducers in the cavity where the
fuel select switch is away from the engine

they are able to talk good pilot stories like mono landings. After, she
will sit on you (on the wheel chair) and you start to push hard.

Hi Max
I installed Flight Data System=B4s FC-10 and only one sender FT-60 "red
cube". My fuel system is as per manual (including fuel strainers, electric
gauge and a return line one way valve).
I considered very carefully the ideal place for transducer. One is good to
go and readings are accurate. See attachment.
System has operated perfectly and I am very happy about it. Should be
mandatory - it is very accurate and useful. It really gives you peace of
mind. I will never give it away!
I connected it also to GPS - so it even know how much fuel I will need to
my destination and how much I will have after landing (reserve).
Calibration was straight forward and in my case the per/cent value was 94%.
FDS company service was exellent.
Cheers,
