Subject: | Re: Weight and Balance Scales |
More help please anyone. Today I did a provisional measurement of the wheels aft
of datum and tomorrow I'm going to do it again with even greater accuracy, hoping
that my first effort wasn't too wildly wrong.
Please look at the measurement for your trigear aircraft and give me your figures.
My nose wheel is 14.6" AOD and the mains are 69.75" AOD.
With any luck, your data will be close to mine. Interestingly though is that when
my left door sill was level, the joggle where engine lower cowl meets fuselage
isn't perfectly vertical. It's tilted a degree or two "nose down" on both
sides.

Because there is a short time before my inspector comes to do my weight and balance
check on Tues 26th March, I'm repeating here the last request I made under
a different heading:

The weather in Scotland is very cold and snowy for March and I'm trying to save
my inspector from suffering too long in a freezing hangar. Ideally I'd like to
have all the spadework done so that he only needs to read the weights on his
three scales, then go to the clubhouse for coffee while completing the paperwork.
He isn't so young any more and shouldn't be asked to endure the cold any
longer than really necessary.
Your help in this matter will be gratefully received. Many thanks.

Jonathan,
My measurements are 70.25" for the mains and 15.25" for the nose gear.
I'll send you a copy of my W&B spreadsheet.

Thanks for such a quick response, Rick. I look forward to receiving that data from
you.
If anyone else can supply with their figures by Monday evening UK time, that would
also be really helpful to get an idea of the average distances.
It's interesting that my nose wheel and main wheel figures differ from yours Rick
by about half and inch i.e. the approximate width of the joggle.
I'm going to check again tomorrow anyway, because today I did a somewhat "rough
and ready" trial. I dangled my plumb bob from the rear corner of the joggle where
the lower cowling rear edge ends.
I wonder whether anyone, like Europa in Yorkshire, has ever collated these measurements
for general reference.

All,
Or set up an inexpensive game camera in an unobtrusive location. You can purchase
them through The Sportsman's Guide ( sportsmansguide.com ), Bass Pro Shops
( basspro.com ), Cabella's ( Cabellas.com ) or your local sporting goods store.
All are adjustable for photo interval and some will even capture short video
clips. Most do daytime color and night B&W in infrared.

Jonathan,
My measurements are from the aft edge of the joggle. I can see where there could
be 1/2" or more difference between tri-gear installations. Very small differences
in gear angles can easily produce that at the axle. The important thing
is that both main gear should have the same distance measurement.

Jonathan,
I measured the following distances:
Front wheel: 368 mm - 14.48"
Left main wheel: 1776 mm - 69.92"
Left right wheel: 1779 mm - 70.04"
Good luck.
Regards,
Svein
