Subject: | Just for the record |
Fellow Europaphiles
We (my wife and I) have recently returned from a 3 week trip away in our
Europa. Unfortunately, not the one I have been building for years but one
purchased by one of my sons and me. We were very fortunate in finding this
aircraft because it is at least equal to the best example in Australia.
I live in South East Queensland and the trip firstly took us North to
Rockhampton, then to Mount Isa (NW Qld), across and up to the Atherton
Tablelands in NE Qld, back to Rockhampton and then home again. While in
Mount Isa, my eldest son and I did a trip up to Karumba (in the Gulf of
Carpentaria) for lunch (Barramundi and Chips/Fries). Karumba is world
renown for its prawn harvest but not so much this year owing to no wet
season.
If anyone ever doubts the ability of the Europa, please quote the following
stats :-
Europa 914 Mono
AUW on trip = 621+ kg
Climb power setting = 34" MAP and 5500 RPM
Cruise power setting = 28"-29" MAP and 5000 RPM.
Cruising altitude 8500 ft - 9500 ft depending on track direction..
Max cruising altitude 12000 ft (to get on top of very rough thermals and
Cu - one leg only)
Total Distance - 2519 nm (4665 km)
Shortest leg - 208 nm (385 km)
Longest leg - 484 nm (896 km)
Total of 8 legs
Total engine time = 19.5 hrs
Total fuel used = 360 Lt (79 UK Gal, 95 US Gal)
Fuel burn avg = 18.46 LPH (4 UK GPH, 4.9 US GPH)
Comparing to a car . . . .
Statute Miles per Gallon UK = 36.5 US = 30.5
Metric = 7.7 litres per 100km
Average speed i.e. Total Dist over Total engine time = 129 kts (239 kph)
If you see this Ivan, Congratulations. . . . . I'm most impressed with what
you created and despite what has been said in the past about the Mono, I
Love it! (so far anyway!) Landing in Mount Isa with 38C temp on hot
bitumen/asphalt with a 15 kt crosswind at 90 degrees gusting to whatever,
had me sitting on the edge of my seat with a very high pucker factor I can
assure you but a good experience in the end.
Cheers
Kingsley in Oz

Hi Dave,
We have a mono airplane & bought the glider wings to be able to switch between
airplane & motorglider. We have 500 hours on the airplane but haven't done much
work on the glider wings.
We started Mod 78 and completed laying up the ropes (2 people can do 1 spar in
a long day). Be sure to use Bud Yerly's notes in addition to the instructions
from Europa. We had to redo the first spar because the orientation of the mold
was not clear & we had the bump up instead of down. Clearance is very tight.
After that, at Bud's suggestion, we checked clearances using the intensifier board
as a template and found that the new wing spar will not fit - it contacts
the flap actuator rod. This is only an issue for the mono airplane configuration
(flaps actuated with gear retraction). Apparently the factory tested the
mod on a pure mono glider and on a tri-gear airplane but not on a mono airplane.
Because we (like you) don't want to screw up the wonderful flying characteristics
of our Europa, and we have the added issue of re-engineering the flap actuator
rod, we have stopped work on Mod 78 and are thinking of selling the glider
wings.

Jim and Heather,
I hope you succeed in getting motorglider ability with your Mono-wheel. I still
dream of long wings for mine.(let me know if you decide to sell them).
Perhaps you could change to electric flaps? Or some kind of quick release to get
the flap rod clearance needed when the long wings are on.
Last week I shut down my 914 at 16,000 and feathered the Airmaster for a long glide.
Not sure what the L/D is but it seems pretty decent to this old Hang Glider
pilot. Did my first engine off landing too.
Dave, have you ever computed the L/D of your long wings?

Carl,
I mounted the GoPro in my Mooney for the first time today. Got lots of vibration
and jerky footage. So I must be lucky where I mount it in the Europa.
Vibration comes from the suspension on the ground, the direct result of engine
power and fuselage buffet when slowing up by raising the nose.
How's your anti-vibration device coming along?
Goff

Subject: | Re: SB15-v- clamps |
I have had some further interest in the clamps. To keep upfront manufacturing costs
down i need at least 4 interested builders / flyers.
If interested please contact me through e-mail and i can explain the process and
costs.

Hi! All ,
I think it more than appropriate that I should seek to advise all Europa
Owners that a later version of the Torque Tube original clamps is now
available for interested Europa Owners to enquire and consider purchase.
