If you look forward to checking your List email everyday (and a lot of you have

worth of Entertainment from the Lists each year. You'd pay twice that for a

that much to you? Wouldn't it be great if you could pay that amount and get
a well-managed media source free of advertising, SPAM, and viruses? Come to

Hi Kevin
I have noted your reply to David Joyce=99s request for s/hand
autopilot, by =9Cnavaid=9D do you mean the AI unit, if so
how did it perform, was it as accurate as a full blown mechanical AI ?
I have a limited panel fitted at the moment and miss not having the
attitude indicator but have baulked at the cost and weight of fitting
one.
Hope you find what your looking for David.

Has anyone heard of any updates since:
"Europa Motor Glider wing awaiting approval
We have submitted the results of the Motorglider spin testing to the LAA
and we are currently discussing this with them. We are hopeful of a
resolution and an approval in the not too distant future."
I'm sure folks would like to see what the spin tests and their results were.

Cheers,
I will shortly be fussing about W&B, or CofG if you wish, and
note the need to load unavailable tank fuel to the fuselage for measurement.
Can anyone produce the figure in use by (a) the authority, (b) the kit
maker, (c) the fuel guru or (d) a wild stab? I hesitate to admit the tank is
a 1997 unit.....
I don't relish all this at minus 5 Celcius but have to look busy
at something.

Ferg, Ideally you measure it yourself. Put say 15 litres
in the tank (which will run into both sides) and then
with the plane in a flying attitude (ie sill about level)
run a fuel pump with the fuel pipe disconnected and
draining into a measuring cylinder. What you have left is
the bit you are looking for and you either just weigh the
plane without bothering to learn exactly how much it is,
and/or subtract what came out into your measuring cylinder
from what you put in the tank.

Peter
, You could make an argument for that, but I would guess
most pilots running low on fuel will be flying level in
the hope of getting to somewhere landable, and on top of
that it seems a pity to add unnecessarily to your ready
for service weight if you are going to have your max
allowed pay load reduced by the same amount.

Subject: | Slimline Slip/Skid balnce ball |
Please would someone sell me a simple balance ball of the slimline horizontal type
i.e. not the type in a round housing designed to fit into a 2.25 inch hole
in the instrument panel.
The type I need is made by Rieker Phila and has P/N 10-00700 or S/N 115907 in the
Aircraft Spruce listings. No hole is needed to be cut into the panel and it
just screws on to the panel surface.
I'm trying to avoid paying the $85-ish 65-ish for something that I really don't
need at such a price. After all, my EFIS has a balance ball as part of its display
and so the mechanical one is just a back-up.
Please help. Many thanks, Jonathan.

Subject: | Radio /intercom interference |
Hi all
I have a tri-gear XS with a 914 turbo engine and constant speed prop, when we apply
full turbo power on take off we get a metallic ticking/clanging noise through
the Becker radio / 403 mc intercom, it rarely recedes when we throttle back
which is extremely annoying . The avionics were wired professionally but the
noise just won't go away completely. Has anyone any suggestions what could be
causing this or have you had a similar problem that you resolved,
Suggestions would be welcome?

Turn the Squelch knob to the left on the 403 MC. It is picking up the ambient noise
so needs to be less sensitive. I had similar sounds and this cured it. Just
turn it until the unwanted noise stops, too much and you can't hear your passenger.

Also check the squelch button on the Becker radio. It is easy for it to be
pressed accidentally and the squelch to be switched off without you
realising it. A quick check is to switch the radio off and see if the noise
stops. Of course if it has been there since build it could be an
installation problem, most likely in the intercom wiring.

Turn the Squelch knob to the left on the 403 MC. It is picking up the
ambient noise so needs to be less sensitive. I had similar sounds and this
cured it. Just turn it until the unwanted noise stops, too much and you
can't hear your passenger.

ticking/clanging noise through the Becker radio / 403 mc intercom, it rarely
recedes when we throttle back which is extremely annoying . The avionics
were wired professionally but the noise just won't go away completely. Has
anyone any suggestions what could be causing this or have you had a similar
problem that you resolved, Suggestions would be welcome?

LAA confirmed with me today they are now satisfied with results and
are doing the necessary paperwork to issue the PERMIT TO FLY .

Has anyone heard of any updates since:
"Europa Motor Glider wing awaiting approval
We have submitted the results of the Motorglider spin testing to the
LAA and we are currently discussing this with them. We are hopeful of a
resolution and an approval in the not too distant future."
I'm sure folks would like to see what the spin tests and their
results were.
Cheers and thx,

Jonathan,
Wouldnt ACS P/N 10-00600 @ $59.80 (38.52) do as well for a more reasonable cost?

Subject: | Saggy outriggers |
All,
The following is posted on behalf of Fred Klein who is having a few
computer problems at the moment.
Cheers
Kingsley
All Mono Driver / Builders,
I've always marveled at the precision, geometry, and ingenuity of the
outrigger retraction / latching mechanism on my monowheel...I recall the
first time I heard that satisfying "THAAAWHACK" when retracting the flap
and outrigger as the nylon rod engaged the end of FL3 when the wing was
resting in its vertical rack. (the pix below shows my stbd outrigger
encased in Kingsley Hurst's wonderful fairing).
Alas...when the wing was rotated horizontally and mated to the
fuselage, the weight of the outrigger was just enough to prevent full
retraction and the nylon rod w/ the outrigger wheel sagged about 3/4". I
was disappointed with this, particularly because whatever benefits to be
derived from Kingsley's fairing depended upon full retraction, or at
least that is what I thought.
Upon inspection, I concluded that the sag was due to an accumulation
of the tolerances for fit of the various components of the retracting
mechanism, notwithstanding the high precision of their manufacture.
Ultimately it became clear that the problem could be solved by a slight
increase in the rotation of the outrigger w/ respect to the retraction
of the flap.
See Fig. 17, p. 12, chap. 9M of the build manual.
See also Fig. 24, Section 6, p. 16, chap. 9M.
I've accomplished this by putting an eccentric on the leading radius
of the spacer OR10. I've made NO alterations to the slot in OR5;
however, I have enlarged the 0.25" hole in the plastic washer adjacent
in order that the spacer bears fully on the AN960-10L washer. Following
trial mock-ups in aluminum, a local machinist has made me a new pair of
OR10 spacers from stainless steel; the new spacers still fit in the
0.25" slot in OR5...see photo below alongside standard OR10 spacer.
(The black marking on the side of the new spacer is just marker ink to
differentiate it from other trial spacers.)
The results could not be better...the sag is totally eliminated and
there is no perceptible difference in the flap retraction / deployment
lever movement or amount of force necessary.
My machinist has saved the program for his CNC cutter and is willing
to make up more in batches of 10 or more...contact me off list if you'd
like a set.
Fred
