Dave, I can confirm the current Vne for the UK MG is still 127 knots indicated, at a max weight of 1370 lb with C of G limits 60.4" to 62.5". I am still awaiting for all the other limits to be formally specified by the LAA as part of the Certification process along with the issue of the Permit to Fly. Europa issued a modified ASI glass with revised colour bandings that we used during the spinning trial for G-CBHI, but I have not had it confirmed these are the final approved figures. I may know a bit more when the LAA return to work next week as I am trying to get an agreed Flight Test schedule issued. Best Regards Ian Cook -----Original Message----- From: owner-europa-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-europa-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of djaflyact Sent: 29 December 2013 00:38 Subject: Europa-List: Mod 7 flight ready Again, I'm not sure how many are interested in this, but here is another update: The last issue I had with the prep for flight was the pip pin engaging with the bellville washer. I installed the pin and it seemed to be barely engaging the washer, if at all. I could not pull it back. I planned to drill an inspection hole in the wing root faring to put the video snake in to see if the pin head is coming through the fatter spar. I worked on it today and discovered that I can look through the inspection hole to the port fuel tank outlet and see the end of the pip pin. It was fully engaged. I was able to work it back and determine the shim washers to account for the play. Two thick washers did the trick. The airplane is now ready for flight. If the weather cooperates, tomorrow will be first flight. I will post the results of that flight. The gut check is that the wing root fairings are mating with the fuselage as they were before - within reasonable limits. It does feel good to have the stronger structure now. Does anyone know what the speed are supposed to be on the modified airplane? I have 127 knots for Vne from the past, but the website shows 165 knots on the specs - the same as the short wing airplane. I also have 97 knots for maneuvering speed and the top of the green arc. With that speed, normal cruise will be well into the yellow arc. I see around 110 knots IAS in normal cruise. That is at about 28 inches. Rotax 914. Ian, did Europa have to change the hex bolts on CS08, both Dave and I feel the need to do so. As you know it is a little easier for Dave with EAA than for us. If the factory felt the need the amendment to Mod 78 would be the simplest route. Hi John, I use a balancing tool similar to the Carb Mate to do my synchronizing. First, only adjust one side, never both sides. All you are trying to do is get one side to match the other. If you try to adjust both sides youll be chasing it all day long. Pick a side to adjust and make a small adjustment on the ferrule, really doesnt matter which way, all you want to see is which way the Carb Mate changes. If it improves, that's the way you want to adjust to balance. If the Carb Mate goes the wrong way, you want to adjust the ferrule in the other direction. Then continue to make adjustments till you get the Carb Mate centered at highest resolution. Its really quite easy once you get the hang of it. Rotax-Owner.com has a good video review of the Carb Mate which includes a demonstration on its use. You should check it out. If you are a member of Rotax-Owner.com there are other excellent, detailed, videos available on carb balancing the 912/914. If you arent a member of Rotax-Owner.com I highly recommend joining to gain access to all their other videos and to their informational e-mailing. Thank you, Bob, for your iinformation. I appreciate it. I am in an RV-12 with 190 hours on it now...many minor items have come up but so far nothing major which I hope continues because if you need to get at the starter or other major things the entire engine would have to be pulled...a real pain...the RV-12 with the Rotax 912uls is pretty crowded. Again, thank you John ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert Borger" <rlborger@mac.com> <europa-list@matronics.com> Sent: Sunday, December 29, 2013 9:55 AM Subject: Re: RotaxEngines-List: CarbMate Hi John, I use a balancing tool similar to the Carb Mate to do my synchronizing. My Europa is now standing on its own three wheels so I have no further use for the support frame. It is a large long triangular construction with braked castoring wheels on each corner. Suitable for mono or tri gear & available for a contribution to 'Help fo Heroes' charity only. Obviously for collection but does fit on a roof rack. I live in north Essex near Saffron Walden. Paul Munford kit 625. Please telephone 07816 463106. Seasons greetings to everyone & all the best for the new year

Subject: More on the use of LED strings
Friends, In my last posting on this subject I described hooking up a 5 meter string of LEDs to a small variable power supply and showing the results. To me it was quite encouraging and I elected to proceed. There was some question as to using that power supply in an aircraft as it was a VPW (Variable Pulse Width) unit. These VPW units are notorious for introducing considerable electronic noise into aircraft electrical system. Another variable power supply had to be located. Eric Jones, proprietor of Perihelion Design, advertised his Extraordinarily General Purpose Adjustable Voltage Regulator, hereafter referred to as the EGPAVR, as a low noise variable power supply for both incandescent and LED lamps. Here is his documentation for the unit: I ordered a unit which arrived in very short time and connected it up to my power supply and the LED string. Here is a picture of the EGPAVR connected to the power supply and the LED string with the power out to the string coming from the variable output (yellow lead) of the EGPAVR: Here is a picture of the EGPAVR connected to the power supply and the LED string with the power out to the string coming from the constant output (green lead) of the EGPAVR: It all seem to work quite well for my application. I plan to use a short section of the LED string to back-light my fuel sight gage. Power for this LED string will come from the variable output. The remainder of the LED string will be used to illuminate the tunnel area of the Europa and thereby serve as an interior work light. Power for this string will come from the constant output of the EGPAVR. I=92ll have to add an inline switch from the constant output to the work LED string. This is so that the interior work light doesn=92t come on every time the sight gage is illuminated, it can be turned on only when needed. Now, if only it will warm up enough for me to get back to work in the hanger. It has been quite cold here in N.TX. I=92ve tried a couple of the warmer days to work but still froze. And there=92s no way that epoxy will set up in this weather. So I work at home in the shop on other projects. Next posting on this subject will happen when I have had time & temperature to install the LED strings and EGPAVR in the aircraft. The Phoenix has risen from the ashes. Test flight this morning went very well. No issues and no significant changes. I was able to pull 3.1 Gs. That is quite a bit of pull. This was both in a wind-up turn and a straight ahead pull. I didn't feel the need to go beyond that level. Its quite a dramatic maneuver. Stall characteristics normal. Trim settings unchanged from pre mod 78. It took a few days less than 3 months to complete this. Too many hours to fathom. I hope there are no more such modification to come in the future. Anything else down the road should seem like a walk in the park compared to this. I still officially like the change of bolts to flush screws on the CS08 brackets. Piece of mind. Thanks to Neville and Bud for all their invaluable help. Dave A227 Mini U2 - 30 more minutes of flight time than 3 months ago!
