Rowland, this is the business end of the plane and you and your passengers will
be looking at it for the rest of your flying career. I have seen too many panels
which grate on the sensibilities and decided to take the cop out route and
have it done by a professional car body painter. I know, on this forum we all
love showing off what we can do ourselves but in this case the result was so
good I can live with the shame and even highly recommend it.
My panel was "splatter" painted which gives a really professional look and is very
hard wearing. It is also used to recondition side panels on commercial aircraft
so that says something. These guys also know perfectly how to best prepare
and prime the panel so there is very little chance of chipping and damage later.
I paid EUR 350 all-in which to me is worth every cent given the result.
http://europaowners.org/main.php?g2_itemId=290356
As far as the colour is concerned I steered away from black, opting for a dark
grey mostly because it looks better, but also would be slightly less likely to
overheat. Anything lighter and you would start getting problems with glare in
the windshield.

Hi! For the attention of Rowland....
I have been away so couldn't answer your request earlier.
I used Nextel Cobalt Blue which is very serviceable in that general finger
grime does not show up either also it can be satisfactorily brush touched up
with later panel changes, does not give reflections in the screen (most
important so your Mat black plan may work for the same reasons)

I am doing my best to sort out a program for 2014 and
would welcome hearing from anyone with
ideas/requests/offers to lead. More specifically I would
welcome the following:
1) Camping enthusiasts. If anyone is interested in a
flying and camping tour please get in touch. This could
offer a dramatically cheaper form of holiday than our
usual hotel based trips.
2) Locally guided tours. I would love to hear from
any of our European friends who might be prepared to act
as local guides to show off the best of their
country/region to a group of Europas. I can imagine
excellent trips based on themes like The Alps; The Baltic,
The Danube; Mosel; The Austro Hungarian capitals, etc.
These would of course be so much more enjoyable if they
were guided by someone who knows the area well.
3) More suggestions for fly-ins like the Aero Expo fly
in.
It would be great if we managed to get more cross
border participation in our trips. Although the published
program is generally arranged round a UK start, there is
no reason at all for us not to have trips starting from
other areas and I certainly see it as a great feature for
non UK folk to join in on the UK start trips.

Hi Tony,
With regards to building in the reinforcements to accept the tri-gear
legs, I am in a position to tell you exactly what the weight penalty
will be.
I am developing a conventional undercarriage conversion and it was
imperative to know what the competing landing gear components weighed.
With this in mind, I acquired the remains of a crashed europa and cut
out the cruciform tri-gear reinforcement and trimmed these to represent
exactly the added material before weighing them.
I can tell you that the total for both is a not inconsiderable 6.400 kg.
If any one thing slugs performance and impacts fuel efficiency, its
weight. I would think very carefully before embarking on your "ballast"
mod ;-)

Trevor,
The Schicke is a Club mod which you can find on the Club website under
LAA Standard mods.
Nigel Graham is looking after mods whilst Ian is recovering and if
Roland has had good experience with the SH it might be a candidate for a
Mod. However, I know that Tim Houlihan has recently fitted the Schicke
and it was quite a lot cheaper than the SH. I also have the Schicke and
can support its fitting as against the Ducati.

Subject: | Re: Ducati rectifier/regulators |
I can confirm what Steve has said about the Schicke regulator. I purchased
one last October directly from the manufacturer. I include a quote from an
email from Schicke. my only comment would be that paying for it can be an
issue as he does not accept payment by card or PayPal
He said "you can buy the GR6 directly from us. It will cost 92,- eur +
transport to GB (18,-) + 19% VAT = 130,90
Delivery after payment.
Please send your address then we will send you a proforma invoice.
with best regards
U. Schicke"
I noted that the regulator I fitted has much larger and more effective
heatsink than the Ducatti and Mr Schicke advised me that the large
capacitor is no longer required.
I expect both alternative devices will have better reliability than the
original. The Silent hectic website is worth a study ! there are some
interesting items there.
