Well i have just installed the bungee to the landing gear frame and the whole thing retracts into the wheel well lovely, however i cant put it back down again using the lever.....its just too stiff. I have to get under the plane and pull the wheel down. Now i noticed on the diagram in chapter 29 the arrows on the bungee. The first two point up and the rest point down. This depends on the way you wrap the bungee around the lower tube (weather in front or behind the tube). Are the arrows wrong? Should it be 2 down and 7 up? Most of the weight (the wheel) is behind the lever so i imagine the bungee is really there to lift the wheel not put it down, is this right? Input to aid my aching hands, from pulling on that cord, is much appreciated. Yes the cowls or the bearer frame needs modifying in order to get the 914 with turbo under the cowls. Because of the 4" forward and 1.5" hight difference the XS cowl was developed. Here in the UK any modifying to the cowl or frame needs to be tested and the findings put forward to the LAA for approval which all takes time, money and effort which just prolongs the time it takes to get into the air. It should not require any effort to drop the gear and very little to retract it. Try loosening it of some until you can easily retract and drop the gear. In my opinion, the best way to test on the ground after adjusting (loosening in your case) the bungee, is with the wings rigged. Remove the top engine cowling and wrap a strop around the frame behind the engine, then using a crane or block and tackle, raise the aircraft until the mono-wheel is just off the ground. Place padded trestles lightly (not jammed) under the wing tips and climb carefully into the cockpit. A couple of assistants, one on each side to watch/steady things would be good. They could also simulate air loads by lifting gently on the flap trailing edges when required. IMHO the bungee is set right when the uc/flap lever can "float" approximately in the middle of the gate with air loads. This amount of bungee tension is just great, as it allows you to vary the drag (a la glider) using flaps during a practiced forced landing as a substitute for glider-type speed brakes. It worked for me!
