I took it with me religiously as a back up on the basis that you can use it in flight and in the event of an off airport landing it might be useful. Today my X air which as been excellent up to now went intermittent. I thought ok I will just fire up the ICOM. Well it didn't work or rather not with a headset. Further research on the web suggests that despite having a headset adapter in the box, there are problems getting it to work with a headset. If you cant use a headset then the value as a backup is questionable. Has anyone had this issue? I would welcome suggestions for handheld back up radios which do work with headsets... Thanks Will .. If you don't want to key the mike on the unit you can also hook a mic switch in line with the headset audio. Works like a charm alongside th e SP400 which is cradled with a RAM mount to the instrument panel. I had in stalled radio problems and the handheld really got me out of trouble a few times! I=92m not sure that would help with takeoff, maybe, but sure would help on landing slower. The Europa already has some pretty impressive short landing and takeoff capability. Not in the CH750 STOL league but might be good enough to suffice for your needs. When taking off to the south on my home field (KTDO) I can be off the ground by Taxiway A2 and on landing I can easily land and turn off on A2 without strong braking.
