Hi all,
I would like to add a few comments on the subject of aircraft cruise performances:
1. At a given power, with any aircraft type, higher is faster. That is because
higher mean less density, therefore less drag. For a given power, the altitude
at which you will get the best speed is when you need full throttle to get this
power.
2. Law of physics: for a given true airspeed (TAS), indicated airspeed (IAS) decreases
by the square root of density. Density decreases with altitude and temperature.
To measure and compare aircraft performances, forget IAS and measure
TAS using the 3 vector GPS method. This should be done in smooth air, at the
same power, at the same density altitude and same load.
3. With my aircraft, XS Monowheel 912ULS, Airmaster prop, whenever I want to evaluate
the effect of a drag reduction mod, I climb to 8500ft density altitude.
This can be FL85 and minus 2 deg.C or FL75 and 10 deg.C or FL65 and 20 deg.C
or any other combination giving a 8500ft density altitude, depending on the prevailing
conditions. Going full throttle eliminate the effect of any error of
the manifold pressure instrument. The actual MP will be about 22 In.Hg. Prop RPM
set at 5000. According to the Rotax Owner Manual, this setting gives 59 percent
of max continuous power. This setting give me a consistent 135 kts TAS. I
do not care what IAS is, as this is not relevant. TAS does not change significantly
with the aircraft weight and/or balance. Average fuel burn measured on
many long cross country at this setting is around 19 liter per hour.

When rigged properly=2C all rigging pins in=2C the wing root pins screwed i
n tight or to one thread=2C the forward socket should be just touching the
root rib to out no more than 1/32" . The spar sockets and spar strap must
be installed.
The structure will flex a bit in and out. With about 10 pounds of force pu
shing aft on the tip the forward pin will pull out about 1/16 inch. The re
ar sockets are solid once the mod 52 tie bar is installed.
Once the sockets are on=2C you may need to tweak your sweep. Please make s
ure your forward pin is in the socket fully to 1/32". There should be no b
ending load on the front pin.

Have just finished fitting the fwd W27 and aft W26 wing sockets to the fuse
lage and everything looks good. Wing angle is good on both sides and checke
d at mid-point and wing tip.
Fwd aft sweep measured at several points is good. String from each wingtip
is parallel with the spars.
Both wings assemble easily and both main spar pins fit with a firm push and
a bit of effort.
However=2C when assembled there is a small amount of fwd aft movement at bo
th wingtips relative to the fuselage.
As far as I can tell this is entirely due to the movement of the parts maki
ng up the aft W26 socket. The pip pin is a good fit and the small amount of
movement is between the W26C barrel and the W26A body.
It is a small movement but over the span of the wing is obviously magnified
.
I have checked the gap between the fwd W27 sockets and the wing root rib an
d the gap is 0.8 to 0.9mm both sides.
Should I be worried about this fwd aft movement.
I have no wing root fairings on at present and guess this would help limit
the fwd aft movement when finally fitted.
I hope I am worrying about nothing but all opinions=2C views appreciated to
put my mind at rest.

Hi Kevin. I too have just finished fitting the wing pin sockets. I'm not near my
aircraft at the moment as I am away on holiday and so can't check how much movement,
if any, there is but the question I want to ask you is if you have fitted
the top on as prior to the top and stiffening strips being fitted everything
is flexible.

Thanks for the info. I measured the gap between wing root and fwd socket again.
It is 0.8mm one side and 0.9mm the other. slightly more than 1/32 (0.79mm) but
not by much. Both pins extend just beyond the inboard face of the fwd sockets.
No bending loads evident on the fwd pins, they slide nicely into the sockets
when rigging.
The spar strap and tie bar are not done yet but both spar sockets are on and the
port main spar pin is adjusted for length as per the manual.

Hope you had the same feeling of satisfaction I had seeing the wings on.
Top is not on and stiffeners not done yet. However, I do have a very sturdy build
cradle and temporarily secured the top in place with skin pins about every
8 inches. I understand what you mean about everything being flexible.
With a helper moving the wing tip, the slight, fwd aft clunk-clunk movement can
definitely be tracked back to the movement of the W26C barrel within the lugs
of the W26A body.
It is a very small movement at the socket, almost not visible but can be felt with
a finger on the assembly. Over the length of the wing it becomes a more obvious
movement at the tip although still small.
It is the same both sides so unless I have two bad W26 socket assemblies, I am
probably worrying about nothing.
