Graham,
British summer time would be better! Pensioners don't wander abroad until
the streets are aired anyway!! So what's all this 'light in a morning'
malarkey?!!

Hi all,
I've recently bought G-OGAN, a Europa Trigear 912S that had been languishing
unloved
and unflown at a Yorkshire farm strip since 2006. With the much-appreciated
help of Graham Singleton and David Joyce, it was moved to my home strip in
Derbyshire (Neil France is taking your straps and chocks and a bottle of win

tomorow David, thanks!).
Following some minor tweaking under the guidance of Neil France and an engin
e strip-down,
it will hopefully be taking to the air again tomorrow morning for its
permit check flight.
Hope to see you all around and about in the future.

Rick,
Happy to see you are resurecting an older Europa.
I have done it a couple times now and I find that it is best to follow
the advise of guys like Graham, Neil and David. The bird will need a
nose to tail going over. Do not haste to get airborne with the engine
touchup only. A good going over will probably yield little structural
problems (small delams and the like) but the time spent on a proper
condition inspection, then a proper 1st flight preflight checklist of at
least Annex E of the manual, and a complete Rotax Annex A (install and
commissioning check) combined with your inspectors keen eye will yield a
great flying and dependable airplane.
We have a real problem in the States with 2nd owners rushing to buy and
fly. Often times the poor bird ends up languishing at an airport in
neglect because it was sold AS IS with a tire kick annual inspection and
only a few hours on it, and the new owner ends up with a laundry list of
things to fix or just never fixes it at all and the plane becomes a
burden. We look hard at the logbooks, routine maintenance and the build
manual for clues. Clean and well done logs, documented engine
commissioning, test runs and flight temps, performance notes, proper wt.
and balance, as well as a documented fly-off with stall/Vn speeds
annotated and descriptions raises our confidence. At least in the UK you
have competent inspectors and proper inspection procedures to help new
owners.
Congratulations.

Hello Ivan,
The minister of pension did not know what the average UK pension is.
Well its 113 a week, Us lot are lucky, but many can not afford to keep warm I in
the winter. If we keep the time we are on now Summer time it would get dark later
on winter days, (I think I had it the wrong way round before and miss lead
others Summer time = longer evenings), this is far more healthier in body and
mind, England's average weather record would be better, Loss to the economy
would improve as people would not be late for work, Us pensioners would live
longer, and remember your turn will come too,
The main thing is I can get more done, and my clock is ticking,
Alan

Subject: | Min turns on rod ends, and a stick height dimension request |
Gidday,
I am setting up my tailplanes and specifically my elevator throw. I seem to have
the displacement correct and note that my cranked sticks result in the grips
I have, which unfortunately project forward, conflict with my panel, which is
also on 20 mm rubber mounts. So, I have decided I need to get the stick displacement
range further aft, and I can do this by extending the elevator pushrod
length at the base of the stick. I know it is ideal to make control rod adjustments
equal at each end, but in reality there doesnt seem to me to be too much
logic in that if there is an adequate number of threads in the rod end. My rod
ends in question are 3/8, and I recalled that I needed a minimum of 4 1/2 turns.
Enquiring of my local Europa guru, he said that you need the diameter of
the rod end in depth of thread, which I have noted to be 6 turns. It appears
I dont need quite that minimum, but the less I leave in the rod end, the further
aft I get the range of the elevator. I have only been in a Europa twice, and
whilst my top is not on and my doors not on, I am relying a little on those
experiences to realise my 59 (175 cm) size really needs to be jacked up on about
6 from the floor, not the 4 cushion I originally imagined. The reason I mention
this is because the height of the base of my handgrip is advice I would like
to seek. Of someone with similar stature, or even others who could help out
with advice, Id love to know the height from the top of your thigh support to
the base of your handgrip, or the base of your hand if you dont have a grip
with a small shelf toe to it? I still think I need to cut down my sticks more,
and whilst I appreciate I should do something else at this stage and leave it
until my seats go in, which would mean when my top was on and doors to establish
ideal cushion height, Id like to get the sticks close at this point. I have
already noticed that whilst this adjustment no longer conflicts with my panel
(only just though), full left aileron conflicts with my eyebrow exte!
nsion of
the glare shield over the primary panel, so I might have to shape the bottom corner
of it to accommodate. Irrespective, Ive realised the need to twist the stick
to avoid sidewall conflict, but it also seems to impact then on your full
right stick movement in terms of the space available with a thigh in the way.
Can see it as being a bit of a juggle to get right. Ironically shortening the
stick a little more allows less twist required of the stick at full left turn
input, giving more thigh room on the right hand side when the stick is commanded
for a right turn. This brings me back to the original question, if anyone
can offer up advice of their relaxed hand position on the stick, the height from
the base of their hand to the top of the thigh support with the controls neutral.
Much appreciated.
Regards
Tony Renshaw

P.S. I have the original classic cockpit module which may offer less room for your
thighs at full aileron throw. Im not sure.

Subject: | Cranked sticks.........unusual crease, like a crack |
Gidday, again,
With my cranked control sticks, I stripped them of paint and inspected
them to notice a distinct =93crease=94 where the beginning of the crank
occurs. It is on the inner edge, and appears to be the =93inner=94 point
of a bend, at the end of a vice gripped section, as the bend is made by
pulling towards the operator, if in fact it was done in a vice, which I
very much doubt. So, the actual radius of the bends looks fine, but on
the inner portion of a ben, on the ends of the central straight sections
=93between the bends=94, there is what appears to be cracks. There is no
doubt they are manufacturing marks, and I would like to ask if anyone
else has an unpainted stick, if they could inspect theirs and see if
they are the same. I am not going to paint mine now, but possibly coat
them in a clear polyester coating, like you put on polished floorboards,
so I can look through it and inspect it from time to time, if in fact I
don=92t get these replaced. Any help appreciated, and here is a few
photos to highlight my concern.
Regards
Tony Renshaw
P.S. You can feel it, and the tube that is of the bend appears a
nominally thicker radius, probably bulged from the bending process.

Subject: | Rod Ends Continued |
Gidday again,
Sorry to dominate on this thread here, but Ive just realised I can lengthen the
pitch pushrods by adjusting the rod end at the front, that I can reach, and twisting
in the correct direction the actual rod such that the aft rod end unwinds.
This way I can share the adjustment between the two. Granted this will result
in the aft lock nut being free, but I am unsure that this is a real problem
once both ends are secure. I suppose I should try and get in there to tighten
it up again, but would it matter if I didnt?
Regards
Tony R.

Tony,
Looks definitely like a tool mark from the die used in the bending process.
Not pretty but passed inspection at Europa, one could assume...
Rod end adjustment being equal at both ends is the neatest way of starting out,
but not as important as leaving adequate thread engagement, in my opinion. Leaving
one end not locked might leave you sleepless at night for a long time?
