Jim, See =97 http://europaowners.org/main.php?g2_itemId=63921 for pictures of an ultimate ventilator. I installed them in my Europa. They work great at providing plenty of ventilation. Maybe leak a tiny bit when closed but not enough to worry about. Have never flown in precipitation so I can=92t speak to leaking. Dave, You do it through the Garmin web site. You=92ll have to register your 496 with them and download their map update software. The map update software handles all the downloads. You may have to purchase the updates, I don=92t remember exactly if they came with my 496 or I had to purchase them. I know that I purchased lifetime updates for automotive units. Subject: door strut mods
Im thinking way ahead of what Im doing just now, but want to get prepared well in time. The standard door strut arrangement causes the doors to bulge away from the door recess, as I observed while walking around the Europas parked at the LAA Rally this year. I know there is a factory mod that addresses this (at a price) but I recall at least one other solution being mentioned in this forum. However, despite spending some time poking around in the Matronics archives with likely keywords I havent managed to find a relevant posting. Am I dreaming? Would the originator(s) of any such improvements care to stand up & identify themselves? If the changes were successful, is there an LAA mod number (or even just the LAA project number) that I can quote if I seek to emulate their work? I dont suppose anyone has comparative experience of all the possible solutions, but Im happy to hear opinions on what works best to stop the doors bulging up. in friendship Rowland | Rowland Carson ... that's Rowland with a 'w' ... | <rowlandcarson@gmail.com> http://www.rowlandcarson.org.uk | Skype, Twitter: rowland_carson Facebook: Rowland Carson | pictures: http://picasaweb.google.com/rowlandcarson

Subject: In flight noticed the rear door pin out -horror
    From: "graeme bird" <graeme@gdbmk.co.uk>
Departing Bembridge and over sea I couldnt work out why so much air was coming up the throttle hole and fuel pump hatch, thought some baffle may have moved. Then after a few minutes, to my horror, noticed the rear pin on the passenger door was located outside the plane rather than in the socket. First time but a classic problem. Slowed right down to 70kts , thought about landing then decided to get my wife to close it properly. I was very glad of the plastic hook at the rear and the leaver protector plate at the front. She held the front plate and moved the leaver up, I held the stick and rear hook and all went fine. Couldn't have done it without the plastic dressing gown hook stuck and screwed in place at the rear. Moral of the story (apart from checking before departure) 1. lots of air coming in means something open at the rear. 2, if you are building fit a means of pulling the door back in. BTW does anyone have a rotax vacuum pump sitting idle? -------- Graeme Bird G-UMPY Mono Classic/XS 912S/Woodcomp 3000/3W Newby: 105 hours 26 months on the Mono g(at)gdbmk.co.uk Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=431216#431216

I just added layers of glass below the bulging top rear edge of each door and then filing /sanding away the top edges until I got the desired effect. 17 years of flying later and still going strong without any bulge. Hi all, It is a funny thing because I have never had a problem with the original des ign. No door deformations have occurred, opens as designed, and occasionally in windy situations comes down which one is aware of and can happen to any d esign. The secret I believe is the bonding of the perplex into the window frame bei ng done correctly. Leaving a gap between the perplex and the frame is essential for it to be ab le to expand even with redux filler. Both windows and doors fitted in situ w ith door handle locks in place and with bands wrapped around the entire fuse lage to hold it in place. Worked for me.
