Hi! Tim,
If the gas struts are at full pressure on the original mount point the
top rear corner of each doors begins to deform upwards and so
doesn=99t remain flush with the top of the fuselage surface by
about 1/8=9D Originally it was acceptable to flush the fuselage
out with a thicker layer of filler on it . I wonder if your gas struts
have lost some of their pressure since you were supplied and also do you
leave the doors closed for long periods in the sun and summer
temperatures?
Ted Gladstone=99s mod removes any mechanical stress from that
corner also Andy Drapers mod to reposition the ball fixing and
strengthen the aft member of the doors is much more kind to the doors.

Subject: Re: Europa-List: door strut mods
Hi all,
It is a funny thing because I have never had a problem with the original
design. No door deformations have occurred, opens as designed, and
occasionally in windy situations comes down which one is aware of and
can happen to any design.
The secret I believe is the bonding of the perplex into the window frame
being done correctly.
Leaving a gap between the perplex and the frame is essential for it to
be able to expand even with redux filler. Both windows and doors fitted
in situ with door handle locks in place and with bands wrapped around
the entire fuselage to hold it in place. Worked for me.
Cheers,
Tim

Donald - thanks for your message. I feel somewhat stupid having not thought to
check the resources available from The Europa Club first! Yes, the link describes
just what I was looking for. Ive asked LAA Engineering if they can let me
have the official documentation (its not - yet - shown in any of the lists of
mods on the LAA website).
And thanks to all the others who have responded to my posting, I appreciate your
help.

Just to clarify matter to those who replied but have nothing to offer, I am looking
for a good well constructed aircraft for sale at the proper price. I don't
want a cheap poorly built/ maintained aircraft that has been languishing outside
or neglected for years at the back of a hangar.
I hope that clears up matters!!!!

I am very disappointed to read the negative comments directed at a
potential Europa buyer who thought that he was joining a 'friendly group
of like-minded flyers'. At no point did he express the desire for a
cheap aircraft, rather the contrary, he wanted a well-built, well
maintained plane. I am not able officially to write on the forum,
although I own half a Europa and, indeed fly the whole plane, but ,I
feel very strongly that we should all be more welcoming to flyers
expressing interest in joining our community. I have to send this under
my husband's name, but he is in agreement with my comments.

The the downfall of tweet-size internet postings (of any type) is the
complete loss of any conversational/tonal context. So interpretation is
very difficult. "silly prices" does carry an inferred tone. Not sure the
European market situation, but here in N.A. the Europa existing plane
prices (both kits and flying) have been devalued to *incredibly*
undervalued prices sadly. Silly prices indeed. Supply and demand in action
.

Tim,
You are the first I have heard without a modest complaint.
Mod 66 is a good, but heavy bulky mod. Years ago Bob Berube made a hand
done modification. Later when I found some better (I thought) door
seals I found this method allowed for my thicker door seals. Later I
put into instructions here at Custom Flight for my clients.
Attached is how we do it at the shop yet today. Wordy of course.
The original is on my website, but is not our new one, which is attached
here.
Regards,
Bud Yerly

Hi! Tim,
If the gas struts are at full pressure on the original mount point the
top rear corner of each doors begins to deform upwards and so
doesn=99t remain flush with the top of the fuselage surface by
about 1/8=9D Originally it was acceptable to flush the fuselage
out with a thicker layer of filler on it .

Hi all,
It is a funny thing because I have never had a problem with the
original design. No door deformations have occurred, opens as designed,
and occasionally in windy situations comes down which one is aware of
and can happen to any design.
The secret I believe is the bonding of the perplex into the window
frame being done correctly.
Leaving a gap between the perplex and the frame is essential for it to
be able to expand even with redux filler. Both windows and doors fitted
in situ with door handle locks in place and with bands wrapped around
the entire fuselage to hold it in place. Worked for me.

To all Europa brothers & Sisters!!
Everyone has a different way of expressing themselves in word choices.
We all must remember emails do not transmit voice intonations. Therefore
one must give way to an honest none insulting intent. I sometimes marvel
at how much this list is used to argue over who is right and wrong and
make sure our point of view is heard as being gospel. This list is to
give help to builders and to buy and sell our delightful aircraft not to
feed anyones intelligence ego. If your post is anything else other than
help to those that need it then perhaps it's best to hold the thought.
Stay Positive ;-)

I too will second that statement Sue, well said ..... I can write on the
forum and always intend to help prospective buyers in preparation of
their expectancies for what they get and also what they can expect
having bought it even when it is well maintained they need to be very
much aware of it=99s limitations.

I am sorry that my advert has caused a few folk to reply in a hostile manner.Far
be it my intention to cause dissension in the group.
There was a Europa XS for sale on AFORS where the asking price was 32500 and I
expect it might have been sold for 30.000 the registration was I think
G.BWJH. Although I missed this sale and therefor never saw or inspected the aircraft,
this is the price I am looking at. So please do not take offence.

Hi Tony
As you have stripped the paint off them both, for piece of mind crack test
them. You can buy the dye line system [3 aerosol cans] for a few quid I mean
dollars from an engineering supplier.
But that aside just lets look at the loads your going to put this part
under, to my mind if you were to exert the kind of load required to cause a
failure you would have ripped the whole unit out of the floor! Stick forces
re not high in the Europa, in fact there low and very well balanced don't
worry.
Good luck

Subject: Europa-List: Cranked sticks.........unusual crease, like a crack
Gidday, again,
With my cranked control sticks, I stripped them of paint and inspected them
to notice a distinct crease where the beginning of the crank occurs. It is
on the inner edge, and appears to be the inner point of a bend, at the end
of a vice gripped section, as the bend is made by pulling towards the
operator, if in fact it was done in a vice, which I very much doubt. So, the
actual radius of the bends looks fine, but on the inner portion of a ben, on
the ends of the central straight sections between the bends, there is what
appears to be cracks. There is no doubt they are manufacturing marks, and I
would like to ask if anyone else has an unpainted stick, if they could
inspect theirs and see if they are the same. I am not going to paint mine
now, but possibly coat them in a clear polyester coating, like you put on
polished floorboards, so I can look through it and inspect it from time to
time, if in fact I dont get these replaced. Any help appreciated, and here
is a few photos to highlight my concern.
Regards
Tony Renshaw
P.S. You can feel it, and the tube that is of the bend appears a nominally
thicker radius, probably bulged from the bending process.

Thanks Richard,
It's just disconcerting to have what appears to be a crack on "each" of the bends.
If they aren't on other sets, maybe they shouldn't be on mine either.
