I wrote off my Alpi 300 in August. Insurers would not under any circumstances sell
me the wreckage despite zero damage to engine. They claim that the engine
will be crushed to stop it being salvaged, inspected and put back in to use. This
warning is given in case you buy secondhand. Insurers have the Rotax serial
number and won't pay out if you have an incident and have an engine that has
previously been written off.
Just a warning
Bill Dewey.

Hi Bill,
Really? Is that a new rule?
There have been many engines removed from crashed aircraft and put back to use
in other airframes (when the engine was ok but the airframe was beyond economic
repair). Did the insurers specifically link the engine as a cause to the incident?
Regards,
Phil

Could be a question of an individual insurer taking that approach. In
dealing with Schools Build a Plane matters we have found insurers taking
widely differing approaches to matters of pilot suitability and whether
a school built plane could ever be sold on or not

Hello all, Thanks for the kind words on my Skyview installation. I will
see about uploading additional photos and pertinent info on the convers
ion to my album hosted on the EuropaOwners website. Regarding Fred's qu
estion, I have not upgraded to the touch screen...yet. While I did chec
k it out at OSH, I haven't made up my mind. It is tempting though. Rega

Hi Phil,
Can't say for sure if it's a new rule, but Crawfords the underwriters for Great
Lakes Insurance have defiantly taken that stance. I pleaded with them to buy
the wreckage including the engine to no avail, there was no chance of negotiation.
My engine had less than 400 hrs and started first time in all weathers and
ran like a sewing machine hence my wish to buy it.
The incident was due to carrying out the FREDA checks prior to landing and the
engine stopping due to unreliable gauges and fuel starvation.
To my chagrin it made National TV.
