I believe that you can simply remove the vac pump; you will still have a rotatiing
shaft sticking out of the rear of the gearbox, but that should pose no issue?

Thanks Rick.
Haven't looked at the removal yet nor the manuals so that would be excellent.

years ago I removed the vacuum pump too and made a cover out of 4mm PTFE.
Simple.

I finished and first flown my Europa XS at the end of 2005 and have flown it
regularly for a total of over 700 hours. I purchased a kit as a monowheel
and converted it during building process to conventional tailwheel setup
with the help of Bob Berube in Florida. Other than that everything was built
per factory specs including fuel tank mount. The aircraft was always
hangared.
About two months ago I came to my hangar only to dicover strong gasoline
smell and a blue stain on the floor. I took the easy route first replacing
fuel hoses and fittings even though I couldn't see any obvious wear and
tear. Then I had to face the unthinkable that the fuel tank itself
developed a leak somehow. The bottom of my plane has a inspection plate at
the bottom right after the gear and after looking I confirmed that the port
side of the tank had a leak at the bottom.
I cut out about 6 x 8 " plate from the bottom of the fuselage and exposed
the leak. It was a crack where the reinforcing fiberglass was glued to the
tank. I sealed it with the thick layer of tank sealer from Aircraft Spruce
and so far it has been holding. I flew the aircraft for about eight hours
since.

Subject: | Araldite 420A/B (Redux) Realistic Shelf Life |
Hi All
I am the proud new owner of Europa XS Tri-gear kit A-101.
Today I was going through the kit and I found some unopened cans of this
miracle glue.
The cans were manufactured in 2005 and are labelled with an expiry date 6
months later in early 2006.
In the perfect world I would just buy new adhesive but as this glue is hard
to obtain (at a reasonable price) I'm considering using the glue I have.
The cans show no sign of corrosion and are unopened.
Does anyone know what the realistic shelf life of this product is?
Alternatively if anyone knows of a source in New Zealand or Australia so I
can minimise dangerous goods shipping charges that would be very helpful
(I'm already in an email conversation with Huntsman in Australia).
Thanks
Graeme

=46rom past discussion on this forum, I=99d ignore the expiry
date...I=99d suggest opening the containers and determining
whether or not crystals have formedif they have, warm the Redux
container in a pot of water on the stove, stirring until crystals have
dissolved, then proceed w/ a test strip or two to determine current bond
strength.
just my thoughts on what I=99d do

Just keep in mind " When your at the start of the runway, about to power up, do
you want that little niggle in the back of your mind saying should I have..........."
Just one of the things I keep in mind every time I go into my workshop. Just my
thoughts

Thanks Fred, I appreciate the suggestions. Do you have any suggestions
about how to test the bond strength?
Thanks spcialeffects for your input too, while the use of old glue is
definitely a concern for me at least I am able to test and verify
performance. The bigger concern for me is that I'm building from a kit
that has had at least three previous owners. I will check their work as
far as I can but there are some areas of the aircraft where I am unable to
see what they have done.
Ultimately any aircraft is a collection of trade offs and compromises and
this is just one of many. Hopefully Huntsman will come through on Monday
with a reasonable price for 1.4kg of Araldite 420 and I can just buy it
from them.

GraemeI=99ll stick my neck out and suggest the following:
I always kept all cut-outs and scraps of materials from trimming of
moulded parts, etc. Find a couple of scraps of (say) 3 ply BID and bond
them together w/ the Reduxusing a suitable set up of leverage
and grip, attempt to pull them apartif the fiberglas fails
before the Redux bond, I=99d feel good to go.
But I would certainly invite anyone with real knowledge and experience
in this area to step up and either take issue with or confirm my
suggestion.

That was pretty much what I was thinking Fred. I don't have any cut-outs
or scraps that I can use but I've got a lot of spare glass cloth and I can
easily make some test samples. I'll do this once I've done a complete
inventory of the work to date and after ordering the mod kits and possibly
other parts I need from Europa.
