Subject: | MOD 72 Confusion |
Hi All,
MOD 72 seems like a simple enough MOD so I thought I would start here to upgrade
my yet to be finished project. Things, it appears, are never that easy.
I was viewing some images of other builders who have completed this MOD and was
surprised to see in some pictures that the builder was spraying the inside of
the engine mount with the Etch Primer. My reading of the instructions lead me
to think I needed to paint the insert and the bore of the insert only i.e. leaving
the bore of the engine mount as is after reaming.
So ...I contacted Europa who advised.....
"As written, long before my time here, it seems to say just the bore of the insert
but I would suggest including the bore of the engine mount as well."
Just wondering what the folk who have conducted this MOD done regarding the application
of the Etch Primer?
Many thanks

The "intent" of the procedure is to allow the steel insert to be
assembled into the frame in a way that reduces the chance of moisture
"wicking" into the gap and causing unseen corrosion in the future.
The instructions do recommend etch primer though I'm not sure I would.
Etch primer is designed to provide a good key to subsequent paint, and
you're not going to be painting the inside of your tubes, and it's not a
particularly good corrosion inhibitor. In any case, the moment you tap
your new insert into the hole it will "chisel" it straight back off.
ACF50 is excellent but will need re-applying as part of a regular
maintenance schedule.
If the insert is a "snug" fit in the newly reamed engine frame, I would
suggest smearing it with a copper based assembly grease (copper slip)
before final assembly.
If the insert is loose, I would thoroughly degrease all components and
assemble with a bearing grade anaerobic adhesive (loctite).
For longer term protection (life of the aircraft) of the inside surfaces
of the frame and all of the steel control tubes, I used (and would
recommend) Shell "Ensis sx" Fluid.
This is an industrial water dispersant designed to protect pallet loads
of unfinished steel components outside during production.
A data sheet can be downloaded from here:
http://www.southernlubricants.co.uk/lube.php?searchtext=shell+ensis&ctrl=Go&gclid=CJDdktaLrskCFYoEwwodK8cMpg
Hope that helps

I made a bracket that clamps over the torque tube. It can be put on without removing
the torque tube. I put pictures on the old web sites, but can forward them
to you when I get back home from the holidays.

I have just been going through this.
I decided not to go through taking out the torque tube - I cat see why youd
want to go through that. If I did not have the top on I would definitely
have gone for attaching the servo to the tail torque tube. there are some
very nice set ups that Alain and others posted..

Subject: | Circuit breakers, trim switch and indicator |
Hi to all,
I will be modifying my avionics panel and would like to prepare the new one p
rior to stripping out the old one.
I intend reusing the trim switch, it's position indicator and the square typ
e circuit breakers.
Does anyone know what the hole cutout sizes are for these items?
Attached is a photo showing type of switches.
Regards
John

I have been waiting well over a year now for some parts to be made ,I have had
promise after promise ,but no parts I have even had a email from some one else
waiting like me ,how many more are waiting ?
I am now thinking that it's time to contact my insurance company and ask the aircraft
to be scrapped as parts are not available
It's seems the only way of contacting europa is via the spares department and Karen
has to email the other part of europa /swift for any info but none ever comes
If you in the same situation paid for parts or aircraft kit that has not turned
up perhaps we should get together and get a lawyer

John - here attached is a screenshot of a small part of my radio panel
drawing with dimensions (in mm) added. An export from this drawing was
used to water-jet cut the panel, and the switches fitted pretty well -

However, it appears you have the meter-type indicator rather than the
LED bar that came with my kit, so the hole size for that could be
different.

I ordered some mod kits recently. It took a little while (from memory a
few weeks) to get a price for shipping but once I sent payment details they
were dispatched immediately.
I also asked a technical question and received an answer in a week or so.
Karen has been very helpful.

Subject: | Re: Circuit breakers, trim switch and indicator |
Rowland,
Glad to hear your upgrading your panel. Been there, done that. Try to
keep the plane young!
The trim indicator and trim switch dimensions are on the Ray Allen
website in the instructions.
I=99ve attached the .pdf from my wiring installation files. It is
a bit dated but they haven=99t changed in years.
Note: The indicator and switch are disgusting to wire due to the small
#26 gauge wire and the dumb fact they are surface mounted and use #2-56
screws to hold them.
Consider the following:
Buy the appropriate D sub pins and crimper for these angel hair wires to
make removal and replacement easier or I solder the wires to a pcb pin
connector (shown in attached .jpeg) for the switch and indicator and
mount the trim switch and indicator plugs on a board but you can let
them hang free. I Wire the board to the airframe using about a #20 to
22 wire to the panel to airframe plug because I am annul. but I can
slide out my transponder to get quick access to the board for
unplugging.
Also, I redux a tapped strip of .032-.040 aluminum as my nutplate so I
never have to try to get a tiny nut off the back of a hair like screw.
Life is too short and my eyes and patience are not what they used to be.
To service a bad indicator or switch, simply unscrew the switch, pull
the wire forward, disconnect the pcb connector. Remove the pcb
connector from the bad indicator/switch and solder on to the new one.
Plug it up, screw it back together and leave in less than one hour.
There are too many types of circuit breakers. Are you using Klixon or
some other manufacturer? What I=99m wondering, is how you mount
your breakers. I put the breakers hard against one another so they
can=99t rotate, and I fabricate a bus bar with even holes to screw
the breakers to which makes for a very rigid CB panel that is very
compact. In 12 AY I have three different brands of CBs of all different
lengths and it makes life difficult to get even spacing.
Regards,
Bud Yerly
