Subject: | Re: Dynon Servos |
Martin,
High end (airliners, business jets ...) certified autopilot servos always have
an internal clutch which is engaged only when the autopilot is being used, so
that there is no additional friction in the controls when the aircraft is hand
flown.
Low cost servos for homebuilts, LSAs and microlights such as the TruTrak or Dynon
do not have this feature. That means when you move the controls you are back
driving the whole mechanism: lever, arm, internal gearing and electric motor.
I have experience with the TruTrak and I do not think the Dynon is different.
When you move the lever by hand, it seems quite stiff. Once the servo is installed
in the aircraft, you can feel the very slight additional friction when
moving the control stick, but don't worry, as soon as you are in flight, you do
not feel the servos at all and you can enjoy hand flying as before.

Hi fellows,
Im about to attach the top fuse but first considering do some interior
finish work to the cockpit. In your opinion what would be the lightest
finish?

Wladimir=85I used a =93splatter paint=94 called Zolotone, sprayed on w/
an oversize needle in the gun. I found it to be a wonderful material
which blends easily. I also am happy to have sprayed the interior of the
top fuselage before bonding it to the lower fuselage, believing that
I=92ve saved myself a lot of awkward effort=85Good luck, Fred

Subject: | Re : Dynon Servos |
Hi Martin,
I have a Dynon roll servo driven by my D10A EFIS and the autopilot works
well. You are correct that the Dynon servo does have some small residual
torque when it is not energised. I am absolutely not an electrical
expert but I think it may be that the servo has a stepper motor and the
stiction is felt when the rotor moves from one pole tooth to the next.
In any event I have found that although I do notice it on the ground, it
has no effect on the feel or responsiveness when in the air. Of course,
when the autopilot is engaged, the servo drives the controls and any
stick input will be counteracted by the servo which will disconnect with
heavy input. By the way, my system uses the Dynon D10A only. The AP74
auxiliary autopilot panel is a 'nice to have' item but absolutely not
necessary.
Cheers, John

Subject: Europa-List: Dynon Servos
I was watching a Dynon video on installing servo stops and noticed that
the servos seem very stiff. If two are in the (pitch and roll) system
doesn't that stiffen up the nice light control responses I am used to?
Maybe once power is supplied they loosen up? I would have thought adding
power to them is the way to have them 'lock' for autopilot operation.
Clearly I don't know how they work.
Can someone using Dynon servos offer their experience?
Thanks,
Martin Tuck

The only thing I can add on Zolotone is to prepare your surface well and
then spray it with clear coat to protect it. I did put some upholstery in
my airplane in areas of high wear, for example the baggage compartment.
