Subject: | Mono undercarriage lubrication? |
Should one periodically lubricate the aluminium bronze pivot bearings that the
undercarriage swinging arm mounts and pivots on the engine/ undercarriage frame?
Maybe with a squirt of light oil? And the oilite bushes in the shock absorber
rubber block top and bottom plates - and all other moving parts for that
matter?
Cheers, Jon

Subject: | Re: Painting the Instrument Module |
I've tried a few colours and textures:
Cream colour Nextel - disaster
Dark maroon colour carpet to temporarily cover over the above. Better but not that
good.
Semi matt (it was mixed to be matt, plus a 'bumper' texturizer) dark grey. Just
about tolerable but not perfect.
I wouldn't redo this in anything but matt black, Nextel or 2K (plus the texturizer
for appearance).
On a sunny day it gets hot and the polyester resin in the panel construction can
be smelled. It hasn't distorted, but needs ventilation anyway (Europas like
to cook avionics).
BTW, if you use Nextel then it can be primed (wet on wet) with any similarly-coloured
2K paint for a bond that won't shift, there's no need for the Nextel primer.

Subj: Europa-List: Painting the Instrument Module
Hi All,
I'm looking to paint my new instrument module in the next weeks. It's new, so it
currently got the "Europa Factory Gray" gelcoat.
I'm looking for advice/suggestions.
My thoughts are to go for a matt finish, to reduce reflection, and I am thinking
about a "Boeing Beige" in terms of the colour.
Can anyone advise, or offer experiences, as to what is the best colour/texture
for minimising reflections, but also is there any "gotchas" when painting on top
of the gelcoat... the last thing I want is for it to peel straight off [Laughing]
Best
Jon

I can strongly recommend to get in contact with Martin from Airmaster - he is VERY
helpful.
My Europa is at the Belgian Airmaster dealer Oyen CTR just now to get its new Whirlwind
blades installed :-) Dirk Oyen also knows the complete propeller system
in depth.
Good luck with the troubleshooting.

Subject: | Replacing nose wheel suspension bungee with springs |
Hi,
My Europa is currently fitted with bungee cord on the nose wheel suspension, but
I also have the springs from Europa to replace it. Has anyone fitted the springs?
Do they do a good job?
I'm concerned that the springs concentrate the forces at two points on the nose
wheel frame rather than spreading it out as the bungee does. I'm wondering if
it's probably better to stick with what I already have fitted.
Any experience / advise greatly appreciated.
All the best.
Carl

Hi Graeme,
I obtained Andy Draper approval under PFA 247-13061 for almost the same implementation
as yours, in 2011, for G-TAGR. If you want the paperwork i have, let
me know your email and i will send it to you off-list. It test-flew fine and
i also found i could dramatically reduce the current drain from aby 4A to less
than 1A by using an LED H3 lookalike bulb in the fitting bought from Part for
Aircraft.

Carl,
Converted my mono to trike two years ago and fitted springs with help of Neville.
Unlikely to fail and more or less a permanent fit!
Handling no problems.

I changed from bungee to springs years ago. I have had no problems at all.

Hi Carl,
I fitted the springs I think it was 2009. I've had no
problems what so ever. the only thing I do every annual is make sure
there's plenty of grease around the top and bottom where they hook on to
the frame. fitting was a little tricky, had to expand the springs using
a jack and put bolts in the spring to keep expanded while fitting.
managed to do it on my own, so you shouldn't have any problem. hope this
helps.

I used a grey "hammered" finish from a spray can. I like the look of the "hammered"
finish as it gives the panel some depth. Like others have said, sand the
gel coat prior to priming and application of the top coat. If you are concerned
about reflections you can apply a clear satin finish over the top coat.
The finish has held up very well over the past 14 years.

Erich

Like Erich Using just off the self paint from local car shop works As a earlier
in this posting. Sand the shine off the gray gel coat first. Then look for hollows
under the the gray gel coat by using a hard point such as the edge of a
flat screwdriver, pushing it hard against all the edges and you will find the
hollows underneath. Fill and Sand. Spray with a can of under coat, then 2 coats
of Matt couler top coat of your choosing. I used Black and have never had any
problems with over heating here in the UK but I try not to leave the aircraft
in direct sunlight for a long time.

Carl,
Since you have the springs, Id suggest you go ahead at the next opportunity (such
as an annual) and replace the bungees with the springs. I have the springs
on my tri-gear and the are working great. I helped Bud do my tri-gear conversion
and he slipped a sheet of stainless steel between the spring and frame to
help prevent the wear you describe. Theres lots of up-side to the switch and
I cant think of any down-side at all.
