I am just about to finally bite the bullet and order an 8.33 mhz radio. I currently have a Microair 760 and favour the Trig TY91 as a direct replacement. Has anyone made the transition from Microair to Trig TY91? If so what are the pitfalls to beware of. From trawling the web I see that Bournemouth Avionics seem to be offering the Trig at a good price. Anyone used this company? Richard Iddon. G-RIXS

Hi Richard Made the change 12 months ago. Excellent choice and having the ability to listen on 2 frequencies at the same time is really useful. Only issue with the install was that I had to run a third wire to the headset jacks. Bit of a pain as my headset jacks are in the rear roof panel. This may have been required because the original installation used a separate intercom, which has now been removed. No knowledge of Bournemouth Avionics. Hi Richard The pitfalls depend on the existing configuration and your intentions. As you know the Trig has a good built in intercom so no need to worry about getting connection to an existing Intercom right. The biggest complication I came across with an existing installation without an intercom is that many PTT switches are simply wired in parallel. The TY91 has a priority circuit so that if both crew try to transmit at the same time it gives P1 override powers. This means the PTT switches have to be separately wired. Not a problem electrically but often a pain because of the access to the stick wiring. If you intend to keep your existing intercom the Trig wiring diagrams helpfully explain the connection requirements for a small range of intercoms. If yours is not on the list you are on your own but gives you the general idea. Trig themselves are very helpful if you hit any installation snags. The TY91 has a separate control head so that you can mount the main unit in a supplied tray anywhere that is convenient. This is OK with a new installation but finding somewhere to mount it on a Europa is a bit of a puzzle and can involve lots of wiring changes because of the physical location of the main unit being very different to the standard fit on the panel. Mendelsons normally offer to make a loom for you but current demand precludes that unless you are prepared to wait a long time. They will, however, supply the wiring in lengths you want FOC. Good luck! From: "n7188u" <chmgarb@gmail.com>
Hello Europa Builders Group, So I ended up buying kit A291. The poor thing really deserved to be built after all the sweat and tears Marty put in it and I am happy to help continue this project. Speaking of Marty, he and his wife are the most wonderful people I have ever met. Despite the fact that I am sure Marty is sad he couldn't complete the build and he had to see a total stranger take it away, he and his wife invited me and my son to their house, gave us lunch and Marty gave me everything else he had for this kit (and tons of advice). All this with a huge smile and continuously offering to help. I am going to make sure I keep him in the loop by posting updates and pictures of the project. And a flight once it's done for sure!! So right now it is in my hangar and I am going through inventory. Not an easy task because I haven't been able to really find a detailed list of what's in the kit. I got the spreadsheet from a forum member but will need to see if this is really a complete inventory or a list of what someone had in their workshop during construction. But so far I have been able to find everything I wanted to find. So I should be in good shape. I hope I don't drive people crazy with my questions. I am an somewhat experienced composite builder (building a Cozy IV) and there are a good number of very experienced builders in my community but I love to be a part of the type forums and tend to tap a lot into the collective knowledge (after searching of course). In terms of introduction, I am a 50ish Engineer (Mechanical and Electrical, Medical Devices) and a Pilot (ATP, CFI, A&P, with a short stint flying regional jets for American Eagle before I ran out of money and had to go back to Engineering). I live in a Fly-In community in FL and own a LongEZ and a Kolb Firestar. Used to own an old Mooney I restored before the darn thing became too expensive to keep). So with that said, looking forward to meeting you guys through this forum and perhaps in person. Hmm! Installation could be a problem then. I fitted a Trig transponder a while ago and struggled to find a place for the main unit for that. Anyone got any other recommendations for a one piece radio which will fit in my existing 2 1/4 inch hole. I already have an intercom. I note Mendelssohns offer FUNKE and Dittel which would appear to do the job. Any feedback on these units? Next question! I would like to fit a pair of drip trays under the carbs on my 912ULS to protect the carbs from the heat from the exhaust. It looks very tight under there, especially on the starboard side close to the starter motor. Can anyone reassure me that they will fit OK before I order them? I do have the Rotax carb heaters fitted also. Richard Iddon G-RIXS

Richard, I have also a 912ULS with the Skydrive carb heaters. The drip trays fit. The original Rotax mount didn't go with this setup and I had to make my own attachment - no real problem. If you like I could send you some pictures. OK, I am slightly confused. Alfred says that they will fit but Ira says not. The drip trays I am looking at are the bowl shaped cast aluminium ones. They mount between the inlet manifold and the rubber flange that the carbs bolt to. Maybe there are other alternatives. From: "jonathanmilbank" <jdmilbank@yahoo.co.uk>
One of my friends who shares my aircraft will be taking it away for 2 weeks, to an airfield where UL91 is on tap while mogas needs to be fetched in jerry cans. Does anybody out there know of any issues with UL91, i.e. will it degrade the "Tupperware" plastic fuel tank? Nev Eyre states "No one knows for certain long term. Not seen any failures attributed to it." I have considered using it myself if ever I go touring, but never contemplated using it exclusively for a long period. Jonathan, I have used UL91 ever since it became available at Gloucester, and without any modification to my Rotax systems. It is approved for a range of Rotax engines and IMHO is a more reliable entity than Mogas, which can vary considerably in its contents. David. Thanks for the quick and encouraging response. I've advised my friend to go ahead and use it whenever he likes. To everyone else and as a complete aside, I've done about 10 hours flying since completing the installation of Neville Eyre's cowls and engine frame to replace the Classic set-up. I couldn't be more pleased with my investment of money and time. No performance loss, no more hot starting problems, no great difficulty taking off with a strong left crosswind. Many compliments at the change in appearance and improved fuel consumption to boot! Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=468259#468259
