Actually, in the video it is explained that the crankshaft is welded
together with a special tool...
They strike me as a competent outfit. Still, 154hp seems a little over
the top.
915iS is probably too heavy for the Europa.

Subject: | Airmaster whirlwind blades |
I found the article by Bud Y and Jim B very interesting. I am very
prepared to believe that the extra performance with the Whirlwind blades
is due to the increased twist they have as my change from low twist to
high twist Woodcomp blades added an extra 5kts - probably within
experimental error directly equivalent to your improvement. I would be
very interested to know what the twist on the Whirlwind blades is -
measured in the change of incidence between the tip and 1/3 radius if
one of you could take your Smart tool to a blade. Woodcomp figure is 24
degrees for the high twist.

Subject: | Re: Is ELT and navegation lights required in the USA |
Will,
In the US an experimental aircraft will be issued a Special Airworthiness Certificate.
That allows operation under FAR 91.319 which specifies day VFR only unless
authorized for other flight by the FAA.
With that certificate will come Operating Limitations. They will state that after
the aircraft completes Phase I Testing, the aircraft can be operated at night
and/or instrument conditions if equipped in accordance with FAR 91.205.
FAR 91.205 refers to FAR 91.207 that states that an ELT is required.
FAR 91.205 also requires an anti-collision light system (such as strobes) for all
aircraft and if operated VFR at night, position lights in addition to the anti
collision lights.
Lights must conform to FAR 23. The AC that Fred referenced gives a lot of technical details including location requirements. Anti-collision can be mounted on the fuselage, such as on top of the rudder. But position lights are usually on the wing tip. Here is a guide from Whelen: http://www.whelen.com/pb/Aviation/System%20Requirements/Anit-Collision%20Systems.pdf
So yes, you need an ELT and anti collision lights and if you expect to fly at night,
position lights.
We hope this helps.

Hello there,
I was wondering if there is anyone in the list who is based in Fairoarks
(EGTF), or near by (BlackBushe, Popham, WW, etc...). I currently fly
from LTFC and can see a few europa trailers there, but I've never been
able to meet the owners.
Thanks,
Christophe

jim
excellent much appreciated.
I am getting a bit ahead of myself. HJ460 is ready to fly but I am waiting
on a combination of the authorities and my flying club for an airworthiness
certificate. I then have to go through testing and ironing out the bugs.
The idea is to fly to the USA at the end of the year and then re register
as a US aircraft at some time after that. Bud already said that it is
possible to do this.
it sounds like I should put some lights in in any case and I dare say that
an ELT would be a good investment for the flight up through central America
or across the caribbean in any case :-)
Many thanks

Just unpacked and configured my raspberry pi pilot aware gubbins and displaying
Luton and other traffic on the laptop. Quite impressed so far. Not sure where
I'll locate it, maybe behind baggage bay wall or whether I'll have a separate
display as I already have pflarm on skydemon. I can't display both. It seems
I'd have to buy a new flarm mouse to combine it into Pilot aware - another 600
on top of the 1000 I spent on the flarmcore and then presumably that's receive
only. Anyone else doing similar?
I'll probably see which displays best and just leave the other to transmitting.

Thank you to Jim and Heather for providing such good detail.
I have a Europa with just a fin mounted strobe. Does anyone know of a Europa
that has had wing tip position/navigation lights fitted after the wings have
been completed? And how this task was carried out?

I use PowerFlarm displayed through a V3+ display and will also feed the AVMAP GPS
as well with traffic data. Not a wifi signal in sight.
As this gives me FLARM in and out as well as the ADS-B, Mode A, C and S already
and I have ADS-B out I cannot see the point in adding another unit.

Subject: | Tail Plane Fitting |
Hi All
I'm working on fitting the tailplanes to the torque tube (chapter 18 in the
build manual).
My starboard tailplane fits on reasonably easily but the port tailplane
will only fully engage if I "assist" it in to place with a hammer.
Removing the tailplane them becomes a 15 minute exercise involving gentle
prying. This does not seem right to me.
I'm going to check the alignment of the TP12 drive pins with the torque
tube as I suspect the pins may not be as parallel to the tube as they need
to be.
I assume I should be able to attach and remove the tailplanes without the
use of any tools.
I have attached a photo of the offending assembly in case it is not clear
what parts I'm talking about.
I'd like to know how "snugly" should the tailplane fit on the torque tube
from those who have made it past this point in construction.
Thanks
