Subject: | Flying without the doors |
Has anyone experimented flying a Europa without the doors? I remember reading
in the Europa factory bulletin years ago that this can be done up to a limit of
100 knots. I did actually try this about 15 years ago in my mono, for about
30 minutes, and it seemed to behave OK, but was incredibly windy, with a blast
of air up through the flap slot due to lower pressure in the cabin. Hairstyle
took a week to recover..
I am particularly interested to know if anyone has experimented more, especially
performance in the turn. A banked turn would give me a clear view of the ground
for wildlife photography.
Thanks

Hi Nigel,
For sure the Monowheel with the standard 62 or 64" prop is far from complying with
that requirement!
Remi
<<<<(a) Ground clearance. There must be a
clearance of at least 180 mm (for each aeroplane
with nose wheel landing gear) or 230 mm (for
each aeroplane with tail wheel landing gear)
between each propeller and the ground with the
landing gear statically deflected and in the level,
normal take-off, or taxying attitude, whichever is
most critical. In addition, for each aeroplane
with conventional landing gear struts using fluid
or mechanical means for absorbing landing
shocks, there must be positive clearance between
the propeller and the ground in the level take-off
attitude with the critical tyre completely deflated
and the corresponding landing gear strut
bottomed. Positive clearance for aeroplanes
using leaf spring struts is shown with a
deflection corresponding to 15 g. >>>>

Richard,
I did this in my mono about 10 years ago for a photo shoot and it was horrible.
My daughter was flying while I took the photos and admittedly it was a nasty stormy
day, but it was very noisy, very draughty and seemed quite bumpy.
There was one interesting point. On final approach, for some unknown reason, I
put my hand up and held the windscreen surround about half way up. Suddenly it
all went quiet and peaceful in the cockpit. By then we had both had enough and
didn't want to go up again and experiment further. I suppose it explains why
many cars with sunroofs have small deflectors that pop up in the airstream.

Subject: | Radio interference |
Our 914 seems to be generating more radio interference.
It has been suggested that waving a handheld around the engine compartment may
help identify areas that are generating RFI.
Anyone got any other suggestions?
Thanks
Mike

Paul,
We've been using an Earth X for several years. Have had no problems. It has a
sophisticated battery management system built in. We did have to add a diode
to up the charging voltage a little.
We did an article in the Europa Flyer about it roughly two years ago.

Hello Heather and Jim:
I am interested in the diode circuit to boost the voltage.
Do you have further information?
Thanks,
Christoph

Karl,
So what then is the required clearance for the trigear ?
My 2-blade Woodcomp is 69.5 inches with a ground clearance of 10 inches.
Cheers,
Karl
To test for 1.5g worst case, let the tyres down, load the aircraft to 931.5 Kg
(2025 lbs) and measure the clearance - there should be some!
To test for static clearance at MAW with tyres inflated, there should be 180mm
(7 inches) of clearance.
Remi,
For sure the Monowheel with the standard 62 or 64" prop is far from complying with
that requirement!
Remi
The reason the XS had it's engine moves 1.5 inches higher than the Classic was
to alleviate this problem. In mitigation, the Monowheel does not really "rotate",
but takes off and lands in the three (two?) point attitude.
If you are looking at "non-compliance", look no further than the seat belt mounts!
Nigel

I have flown in the right seat with that window off for about fifteen minutes.
At 85kts the aircraft handled nicely. Wind noise was not to bad! With headsets
on. View was great.

Hi
I received today the approval of Europa aircraft to mount a durandal 100M propeller
of 170cm. I am sending the documents to the DGAC today to finalize the file.
I keep you informed
thanks for all

Paul,
The ETX36C has been used successfully for years. The Rotax 914 charging
system needs to be slightly modified to bring the charging voltage into the
range the lithium battery likes (Jim and Heather brought that to my
attention). A diode on the 'C' terminal of the Ducati regulator is adequate
to fool the regulator into thinking the battery is at a slightly lower
voltage than it actually is and so it will up its charge voltage, placing
the battery into proper charging range. I think its 13.9 to 14.6 volts per
the data sheet, if memory serves.
This lithium battery has cell protection. It has internal circuitry that can
remove the battery from the circuit due to too low or too high voltages
(i.e. when it is overcharged or drained). A happily charged battery will
not disconnect from the airframe. It is wise to have a good metal battery
box for these in the unlikely event of a thermal fiasco. A thin Fiberfrax
layer can likely do wonders too.
The weight savings is amazing.. When you hold them in your hand, they feel
like a fake toy battery, but they will spin the engine right up for sure.
Greg

Hi All,
My trusty Odessey battery has died and gone to heaven (or wherever batteries
go).
I am seeking peoples experience with the new style Lithium batteries, and in
particular what can be sourced in the US.
Thanks, Paul
