Hi,
Does anyone use brass gauze filter elements in their PRO805 glass-bodied line filters?
If so, could they post their supply source on the board please?
regards,
Clive

Clive, I don't use the glass filters - prefer to rely on an Andair
gascolator. But I do have a brass finger filter in the fuel tank. They
are relatively easy to make to size/shape with the brass mesh and
solder. Regards, David Joyce, GXSDJ

Hi Danny.
Sounds like you had a test kit originally supplied by Airworld. ( now closed )
I use a kit supplied by Frost automotive supply company. www.frost.co.uk
E-test kit. It has a blue dye to add to the petrol/water mix that helps identify
the ethanol %.I check out all fuel purchased GULF petrol here on the I o W.
at the moment has no ethanol. Hope this helps.
Rod.

Hi! Clive,
After my experience with accumulation of wipe out fibres and dog hairs in my
original tank gauze finger filter leading to the late Nev's joke about
"shaving the dog"! I replaced my finger filters by a homemade brass
cylindrical finger filters ( I also corrected a faulty drilling on the tank
fitting ). I also use a mini gascolator fitted to EACH of both tank outlets.
I have no confidence in the glass filters you mention.
Regards
Bob Harrison G-PTAG.

Thanks both.
David - i think you refer to the coarse strainers in the tank outlets - parts F09B
and C (which every Europa should have, to ensure e.g. small goats etc do not
get into the fuel lines), whereas i refer to the inline fuel filter units inserted
between tank outlets and the selection tap normally installed under the
seat squabs for ease of inspection.
Along with the appropriate approvals, replacing the current plastic woven mesh
removable filter elements with something made from fine brass gauze would seem
to offer a considerable safety and environmental improvement.
Interesting that you both use Gascolators. Are you able to see the state of contamination
in these without disassembling them (i.e. are they glass-bodied?),
and could you point me at the MOD that goes with installing them, and a supplier
of the mini-gascolators (Bob), please?
Thanks in anticipation of your replies . . .

Hello Danny,
I have 24 of those cotton buds left from a 303381 fuel testing kit i brought from
Airworld a few years ago. You are welcome to some if you can send me your
address. Not sure if they have deteriorated with time (though they have been
dry-stored in a sealed plastic bag).
In my view Bob Hitchcock's bottle mentioned as in a previous post (the function
of which incidentally is replicated on most of those fuel-drain/screwdriver things
us Aviators all buy during training) is probably the neatest solution -
since it involves only mixing a small qty of fuel with a carefully measured sample
of water and noting the change in relative levels due to mixing of part of
the water sample with any alcohol (ethanol) existing in the fuel - an approach
which also avoids buying and managing other test-related supplies.
Regards,
Clive

Hi, I used to use the Airworld blue buds too which worked fine but not available
now. Instead I use a droplet of food colouring in a small sample of fuel in
a glass jar. If there is no ethanol the droplet stays completely separate,
if there is ethanol the droplet dissolves and discolours the whole sample.

Subject: | Europa XS Dummy Wing Spars |
Hi, I'm about to fix my cockpit module to the fuz but one last job i need to attache
the cow bell to the cockpit module. My wings are in storage in it quite
a logistical task to get them and therefore I was hoping someone in the UK might
have a set of dummy spars I could borrow between the 23rd March and 14th July?
Many thanks in advance
Alan

Subject: | Back instruments |
So the saga continues.
New Dynon screen installed and working fine.
I chickened out of remodeling the entire instrument panel. I have decided
to install a cluster of 1.25" round instruments for back up.
- Tach
- MAP
- Oil temp
- Oil press
- Ammeter (I am going to install a hall effect sensor for the Dynon and
use the shunt for the round gauge)
- Fuel pressure.
Now you all educated me as to the fact that you cant run two gauges of a
single resistive senders.
It turns out that all temp senders are resistive. Just for the info of
anyone else who is doing this, UMA can make a dual sensor sender - one with
two sensors with two different connections so that solves the temperature
sender.
However UMA tells me that voltage based senders can in fact power more than
one gauge. So the solution is simply to buy the round gauges and use the
Dynon sensors kit to power both Dynon Screen and round gauges.

Hi Alan. I asked the same question when I was building and the answer I got was
only a dummy would use a dummy spar, and they were right. I have someones dummy
spar and its a very poor manufactured mdf piece of fire wood. As much trouble
as it will be dig out your wings and use them as you will once its built.
Good luck

Hi! All.
I checked on the Frost site and spoke to a very helpful gent who explained
that their additive was meant to only protect against corrosion and needed
adding to all your fuel each bottle is sufficient for adding to 250 litres
of fuel !
However he kindly recommended me to an American site who produce a small kit
container which allows you to take a small sample from the water drain point
on the aircraft and if Ethanol is present it changes colour to blue (that is
the whole sample) . But it was expensive at about $ 35 per unit ! I paid by
Pay Pal and the final bill including postage and packaging finalised at
approx $70 , so I was scammed yet again !
Beware of wolves in sheep's clothing ( bastards) sorry but no other name in
my vocabulary .
So I can test a small amount from each fill up but need to effect similar
checks if I land away.

likewise i have no faith in the glass cylindrical in-line filters recommended
by Europa,
i also use a gascolator, the manufacturer of choice for most of the fleets
is Andair,
Not the cheapest but certainly the best, you can drain the contents of the gascolator
bowl to check for contamination and removing the bowl completely
isnt that difficult,,

Hi Ivor,
Thanks/Yes and agree - Andair is a great solution (if a little pricey compared
to the factory solution).
But i do really like the glass 'easy-to-inspect' approach. Make it fast and easy
(to inspect), and the chances of a mishap will probably reduce . . .
Without getting too hung up on technical solutions, remembering to check the cleanliness
of whatever filters you have, before flight - and switching tanks if
the engine coughs, are probably more important
clive.
