BOB Archer makes a whole set of antennas for glass aircraft. Aircraft Spruce sells
them. I put my VOR antenna in the wing. I can get a good signal fifty to
sixty miles away.

I hope you have not closed out your wing. If you have then you could built a Balun
antenna.

Now, the question remains, is it better to orient the antenna horizontally for
NAV, compared to vertically for COM?
