That's encouraging Will, I hope my Speed Kit gives me similar numbers.

My PtF arrived on Thursday, so I am looking forward to starting conversion training
in my Europa. It's Murphy's Law that the PtF has arrived just as I start
a hectic 10 days of visits/trips/appointments which means life has delayed my
flying, just when I am itching to get out there !

I was hoping to fly in to the Europa 25 year anniversary event and AGM at Turweston
next weekend, but will have to settle for a drive there, but I hope to fly
in to the LAA Rally later in the year.

Jonathan,How do you know that the oil is draining overnight? Do you check oil level
immediately after last engine shutdown?I ask because I find there is a net
drain of oil (from the catch tank) during any prolonged idle (e.g of a few minutes,
and including glide decents) where followed by shutdown. Alarmingly so
on occasions (to below the minimum dipstick mark). Prolonged idle may sometimes
be unavoidable during taxiing in traffic, or voluntary, such as when allowing
exhaust valves/piston rings (and turbo?) to cool before shutdown.

      Subject: Europa-List: Gurgling (burping)

My 912ULS engine has done 250 hours since complete strip-down and rebuild after
I bought it from an acknowledged Rotax engine expert. The three others who share
the Europa with me are all happy with how sweetly it runs. The compressions
      were measured very recently
and are excellent (close to 200 psi). The oil pressure is good being in the vicinity
      of 4 bar. BUT....

Nine times out of ten the oil drains quickly (overnight) from the tank to a level
below the flat on the dipstick. This wasn't always so and has become worse
over time. It used to take about a dozen compressions done quite slowly to push
      the oil back into the
tank, while these days it can often take 50 or more compressions. Why?

My supposition is that the oil escapes past the oil pump and the rate of escape
depends on the position of the pump lobes when at rest. So if the oil pressure
remains good in flight, what's changed? Perhaps the oil pressure relief valve
      is sticking in some
       way?

Your experience and knowledge of likely causes would be gratefully received.

I assume that you are following SI-27-1997 on checking the oils level.

Personally I check after flight, I let the engine cool a little first, and t
hat usually results in the =9Cgurgle=9D after only a few blades.
I also check before flight when engine cold but if I=99ve done it aft
er flight the check, when cold, only needs a few blades as all the oil has a
lready been returned to the tank. Never had oil draining from the tank back i
      nto the engine.

I have found cold engines will take 10 or 12 blades, sometime more, to get t
he gurgle and this is often when I=99ve hired something Rotax and the p
revious user has not done it warm.

      >> My 912ULS engine has done 250 hours since complete strip-down and rebuild
after I bought it from an acknowledged Rotax engine expert. The three other
s who share the Europa with me are all happy with how sweetly it runs. The c
ompressions were measured very recently and are excellent (close to 200 psi)
. The oil pressure is good being in the vicinity of 4 bar. BUT....
      >>
      >> Nine times out of ten the oil drains quickly (overnight) from the tank to
a level below the flat on the dipstick. This wasn't always so and has becom
e worse over time. It used to take about a dozen compressions done quite slo
wly to push the oil back into the tank, while these days it can often take 5
      0 or more compressions. Why?
      >>
      >> My supposition is that the oil escapes past the oil pump and the rate of e
scape depends on the position of the pump lobes when at rest. So if the oil p
ressure remains good in flight, what's changed? Perhaps the oil pressure rel
ief valve is sticking in some way?

| Subject: | Re: Speed kit ....follow up |

      Bob and Will,

In my speed kit development, I found that the idea of silicone was a non st
arter unless prep was very complete as household silicone sealants are pron
e to release. Marine 3M 5200 adhesive/sealant is overkill, but it is the b
      est.

Do not allow your gear leg covers to rattle at all, if possible. I use tra
nsition fairings glued to the pant and fuselage and foam fill or make a bul
khead to keep the gear leg fairing tight. If these move in flight it reall
      y slows the aircraft.

12AY went from 117 to 134 knots with a full speed kit and transition fairin
gs. Of course my fairings are fiberglassed on solidly to the fuselage and
pant and my leg fairings are slightly more airfoil shaped and allow very t
ight transitions which allow movement of the gear without cracking but are
very smooth without tape added. Much more glassing, filling and sanding is
required than the rather loose install of the factory pants.

      Best Regards,

      Bud Yerly

That's encouraging Will, I hope my Speed Kit gives me similar numbers.

My PtF arrived on Thursday, so I am looking forward to starting conversion
training in my Europa. It's Murphy's Law that the PtF has arrived just as I
start a hectic 10 days of visits/trips/appointments which means life has d
elayed my flying, just when I am itching to get out there !

I was hoping to fly in to the Europa 25 year anniversary event and AGM at T
urweston next weekend, but will have to settle for a drive there, but I hop
e to fly in to the LAA Rally later in the year.

| Subject: | Quiet usb charger recommendation. |

I have three....the interesting thing is that they all started quiet but 2
of the three one a Duracell and the other a Chinese whatever have become
      intermitently noisy.

The quiet one is from an ancient tomtom gps. Go figure.

Can anyone recommend quiet usb chargers (cigarette lighter type)?

      Thanks

      Will
