The oil is also spraying on the propeller slip ring and clogging the carbon brushes and so causing slow or intermittent changing of the Airmaster propeller. The total oil loss is minimal its just inconvenient and messy. Do you think the seals around the prop have failed and is this because a bearing is failing also? Is it a straight forward job to repair and are special tools required? I regreased the Airmaster propeller a few weeks ago and firstly imagined I had overgreased but now i am convinced its oil fro the shaft. I have checked the breather in case it was blocked as that might have caused the problem Regards to all and anticipating some lively replies Bill -------- Give a wise man knowledge and he will be yet wiser Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=481516#481516 ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 09:22:07 AM PST US From: Bud Yerly Subject: RE: Europa-List: LEAKING OIL ON PROPSHAFT BY GEARBOX Bill, Clean the engine and run it with the cowl on with leak detector in suspect areas. I use a talc like oil leak spray that sticks to the engine and allo ws visual confirmation of where the oil leak is coming from. Messy putting talc on it but it works. It must have a sticky substance to hold the talc in place. There are dyes to add to the oil and UV lights in the kit to det ect the source also. Since oil blows around, you must do this with the cow l on, run it on the ground, de-cowl and look. Questions: 912, 912S or 914? Total time on engine. What engine serial number. Did y ou mess with any of the case bolts? Last time oil lines serviced? If a 91 2 series, do you have the new fuel pump? There are many sources of leaks identified in the Service Bulletins over th e years from cracked blocks between the cylinders, to oil pump seals, to th e gearbox PTO seals. Oil tank fittings have also been known to crack. You must do some detective work. Get on Google and the Rotax Owners site a nd start looking for your serial number and some fixes Gear boxes are best left to a Rotax shop in my opinion. They have the tool s etc. Oil seal replacement on the pump is not hard, depends on the engine. Oil lines are fairly routine owner stuff. If you messed with the crank case bolts, it is your fault, and fixing it is not an option except for a pro to reseal a case. If the case has cracked, I hope you have a warranty, otherwise it is a shor t block which can cost quite a bit but you will get the new case which is v astly better than the old ones. Most likely spots of grease from the prop hub after maintenance. Slightly over packed grease around collars. Slowly becomes less and less as time goes on. Check the bore collars for correct tightness and wipe away excess grease.
