Hi Ruedi,
Get rid of the old tail wheel. I did about 100 hrs on it and was scared of it.
The later wheel is much better. I find the spring action perfect on take off as
there is nearly no transition from ground to air.
As to landing, I am told by passengers that I land with the tail wheel first, I
never notice because I am concentrating on keeping it straight. If you do that
there is no bounce!
If you fit the new tail wheel see recent posts about mounting it.

Hi Ruedi
One more thing, Dont get rid of the pushrod that moves the rudder. Connecting the
rudder cables directly to the rudder puts too much load on the rudder hinges
And the flange. Europa did take over my mod for this, the tailwheel is driven by
cables from a bracket bolted to the bulkhead.
It is possible to use the existing crank driving the old Classic tailwheel but
using the mod will save weight.

Subject: | AAE Dipole Antenna |
Dear forum members,
So these last two weekends I got the top fuselage bonded, firewall back taped,
mass balance column top bracket done and I just have to bond the mass balance
top stop to be done with this stage off the fuselage assembly. It is now time
to start the wings (I did fuselage before wings because of space constraints).
The question I have for the group is which of the AAE dipole antennas is more appropriate
for installation in the sternpost, the straight or 90 degree connector
one? I bought a used Becker radio from Germany, will be getting the radio
in a couple of weeks and would like to try it. Having the antenna will help. I
could of course build one with the ferrites and copper tape but figure that for
the price might as well get something properly tuned and be over with.
BTW, is it better to install the antenna forward or aft the sternpost? I read a
posting from someone that installed outside (aft) but it required cutting a square
hole on the post and I am not to crazy about that idea (weakening?)
Regards,
Chris

IMHO, if you want it "properly tuned" you have to do it yourself. The
purchased one will not be, but will be good enough.

(getting back to building, I promise).

I understand nothing is perfect but the AAE but you're not supposed to mess with
the AAE antennas. they come tuned from factory. My understanding.

Subject: | Drilling Mono LG bolt heads |
Dear forum members,
My mono landing gear swing arm is done and I wanted to install it in the airplane.
Looking at the manual I see the part about drilling the bolt heads. Yikes!
That is something I really don't look forward to doing, with images in my brain
of breaking tiny drill bits and having to order more bolts, etc.
Does anyone remember if that was a pain to do, with a multitude of broken and stuck
drill bits and the like? or are the bolts actually soft and not a big deal
to drill?
Not to gripe but I really wonder why couldn't Europa supply pre-drilled bolts with
the kits [Evil or Very Mad]

Chris,
This can be done with care if you wish.
It can be a PITA with little broken bits and unusable bolts.
Unless you feel you really need to learn how to drill bolt heads, order the drilled
head version from Aircraft Spruce or other vendor.
Not "Evil or Very Mad," just cheep.
Same with antennas. Unless you feel the need to learn how to build and tune an
antenna just buy one. Quicker, easier and, when all is said and done, probably
less expensive.
Just my 2, YMMV.

Chris,
Buy the drilled head AN bolts and save the aggravation.
AAE antennas: I have installed many. I put them in the vertical fin and h
ave put them on the stern post as well as just behind the baggage bay. All
have worked well.
Don=92t cut the AAE or anything, they work right out of the box.
Technique, if putting on the aft side of the stern post, and cutting a hole
into the post for the coil, make sure the rudder clears.
Personally I put them on the inboard skin of the port side of the fin and s
imply cut a notch in the ribs to clear the antenna. Run the coax through
a couple of grommets and leave it alone after glue up. Since the antenna
doesn=92t fail, but anything can, a simple access hole in the fin can provi
de access or I just will cut a hole (premarked for the client if necessary)
between the mid and top rib and reach in and unplug the coax connector if
for some reason my BNC connector failed.

Thanks for the Reply guys.
First, let me assure you I will buy the bolts if I find them. Those bolts are 5/16-18
and 2 1/4 inch long. I didn't find that size at ASC. The only drilled head
bolts I found are AN75A-21 or MS20074-05-21. I will look more for them to
see if I can find the four I need.
Regarding the antenna, I will follow your advice Bud and bond it to the fin. i
assume you use the right angle connector version, is that right?
And don't worry, I'm not cutting it. AAE clearly states not to mess with their
antenna :)
