Subject: | Aileron closeout reinforcement question |
Dear Europa forum members,
I am getting ready to reinforce the aileron closeouts on the wings (chapter 8).
Figure 8 of this chapters says to apply the reinforcement full length but not
to flox the aileron balance areas. The question is: is the BID reinforcement
applied also over the balance areas or not? The indication not to use flox would
point to not reinforcing the balance areas and the reference to full length
is just indicating the reinforcement is along the entire closeout (but not on
the balance areas).
is my understanding correct?
Thanks,
Chris

Chris,
For what its worth i reinforced the whole closeout including joint between
the aileron balance boxes and the lower surface of the wing. I used flox
on all the sharp corners. Dont go over the upper side of the aileron
balance boxes otherwise you'll have difficulty with putting the top skin on

Thanks for the info Will. I guess the only disadvantage of placing the reinforcement
over the thin skin where the balance boxes go is them getting pushed up
and interfering with the upper skin (as you mentioned). Let's see what other
people say.

Subject: | Wing tie down anchors |
Dear Europa forum members,
As I approach the point of closing the wing, I wanted to ask the group how do you
tie down the wings if you don't have the tie down anchor mod.
I have them but I am debating whether to install them. Yes, they are probably
very nice, but they are heavy and I am trying to keep my airplane as light as
possible.
If there is a decent alternative to tie down the wings that doesn't involve using
these anchors I will not install them in the interest of weight saving (and
a little less work). I guess one way is to tie the wings down is through the
outrigger hinge mechanism but I am afraid that gusty winds could cause damage
to the mechanism.
Regards,
Chris

I tie down at the undercarriage frame and tail. Aeroplane isnt going anywhere and
they dont add weight as well as been strong points.

Chris,
In all honesty they are not needed. The main two points to tie down are the tailwheel
and main wheel which are easy to do. The wing wont lift too far due to
the outriggers on the other side. I just put two ground pegs either side of the
main wheel and tail wheel and link them with a tie down around each respective
wheel. Holding the main wheel down is, in my opinion, most important.
Cheers,
Tim

Sounds reasonable. Will do. A little less work and a little less weight :)

Hi Will,
Although I did put door locks in place, I came to the conclusion that if som
eone wanted to break in, they would do more damage to the aircraft as compar
ed to what they may take. I always take my EUROPA Cover with me and use it a
s a deterrent and to keep the weather out. Always remove my headsets and any
thing else of value.
The locking device I used was flimsy and not strong enough as a deterrent an
d would leave me stranded if broken into with door not closing.
Cheers,
Tim

I think the only semi effective lock would be one which uncouples the latch h
andles from the shoot bolts. I've not yet found such a solution but keep loo
king. Mine might end up being self-designed.
Cheers,
Pete
