Subject: Purging oil system / Coolant
Hi! Eoin, For your thermostat to work by sensing the oil temperature there must be a small by pass to allow hot oil to begin to heat the THERMOSTAT for it to begin to work and allow more hot oil through. Unfortunately the process of purging the oil cooler matrix will take longer since a considerable amount of oil/air will need to pass through the small orifice. Yes the coolant will need purging but it relies on you starting the engine and allowing it to cool a few times and topping up the reservoir to level ( assuming that the cap seals are undamaged and appropriate poundage.) I just used my small aircraft tyre inflater to pressure the top of the oil tank to push the air out of the oil cooler but it surprised me how long the process took to get the air to gurgle through back to the tank whilst turning the prop. .... and that was after motoring (ignitions OFF ) with an ignition plug removed from each cylinder on the starter . But there was no doubt the air was removed by one hell of a gurgle !!!! Best wishes Bob Harrison G-PTAG -----Original Message----- From: owner-europa-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-europa-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Eoin Maguire Sent: 28 February 2019 06:59 Subject: Europa-List: Purging oil system / Coolant Hi all Just after completing the 5 year hose replacement on our Europa and Im just wondering does anyone have answers for the following : 1. My oil system has a thermostat in line, just wondering when purging as the oil will be cold am I effectively only purging half the system as it,ll bypass the oil coolers ? Or is there another method of doing it? 2. Do I need to purge the coolant system or once I fill with new fluid is that me done ? Subject: UNI cloth specs?
    From: Pete <peterz@zutrasoft.com>
As one of the many who were short changed by Mr. Wilson, I have inadequate UNI for my project and would like to source locally (being in Ottawa, Canada). Does anyone have the specs for the UNI cloth? Or must I ask the factory? Many thanks, Pete A239 Finally getting going after 17 years of real life.

Hi Pete The original cloth was Interglas 92145 Unidirectional, 220 gm/sq m. The BID was 92125 2x2 twill, 280gm sq/m. Have a look at http://www.streifly.de/shop%20reparatur-e.htm Graham > On 28 Feb 2019, at 17:40, Pete <peterz@zutrasoft.com> wrote: > > > As one of the many who were short changed by Mr. Wilson, I have inadequate UNI for my project and would like to source locally (being in Ottawa, Canada). > > Does anyone have the specs for the UNI cloth? Pete, How much do you think you need? I have a reasonable amount surplus which I could spare you at bargain price - like 10% of 2000 retail price! Regards, David Joyce, G-XSDJ PS This is because I bought a complete abandoned (because builder died!) kit to get the bits I needed for my repairs and have been happy to distribute the surplus to all parts of the world. Condition indistinguishable from new. Subject: I'm puzzled, again!
    From: "JonathanMilbank" <jdmilbank@yahoo.co.uk>
This time it's the old topic of 912 ULS kick-backs on start up. After a couple of days during which our group members pondered possible causes of this recent phenomenon, following a long period of relatively trouble-free starting, we reached the conclusion that the battery has become elderly. The gradual slowing of cranking speed while engaging the starter, creeps up unnoticed over a period of years. A new battery fixed the problem most convincingly, whizzing the propeller around with great enthusiasm. But one of my group members raised this question "Why should there ever be any kick-backs at all, even with a tired battery, considering that we have the latest CDI boxes in addition to all the other measures recommended to prevent it? After all, the built-in temporary retardation of timing to 3 degrees ATDC while starting, should guarantee that kick-back can't happen even with an old battery!" The only "explanation" I can conjure up is that when overall battery voltage reduces with age and while it drops even lower during cranking, the built-in deliberate delay in spark being triggered until after TDC while starting doesn't function, or only works partially. How's that for a half-baked theory? Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=487866#487866
