Why would you take fuel from t he side that is not getting the return fuel. You should never get to that st age but I want to know I have used every drop if it all goes wrong. Most excess f uel now flows out through an overflow tube from the new Rotax engine mechani cal fuel pump. I would prefer to make sure the reserve fuel filter is not bl ocked and the flow to the engine is uninhabited by selecting the Reserve fir st for 30 mins then back to the Main for the last 30mins, a conservative app roach. > Cheers, > Tim > > Sent from my iPad > Tim Ward > 12 Waiwetu Street, > Fendalton, > Christchurch, > 8052 > New Zealand > ward.t@xtra.co.nz > 021 0640221 > >>> On 2/11/2020, at 9:27 PM, John Wighton wrote: >>> net> >> >> Reply to Tim. >> >> The return line goes to the reserve side, therefore the last tank you swi tch to should always be the reserve. The returned fuel is very significant. It is about 12 liters per hour at cruise power with the standard Europa fuel system (Rotax 912, all carburetted versions). Then if you empty the reserve side first, the 9 or so liters remaining on the main side will not all go to the engine. Suppose your engine is using 15 liters/hour at your selected cruise power, the fuel flow from the tank will be 27 L/h and the main side will be empty after 20 minutes. 4 liters will go to the reserve side and stay there... unless you switch tanks once again. Better empty the main first and get 36 minutes of powered flight after switching to reserve. With the 914, the average return flow is dramatically higher, making the problem worse. I didn=99t realise the return fuel was that significant. My apolo gies, I shall return to the recognised method in the future, Main Tank then R eserve.
