Will,
Here are some details of the cowl flap we have.
Jim & Heather
PS Before the cowl flap, we just used HVAC aluminum tape from Lowes to cover some
of the oil cooler.

Subject: | Re: Is 160F too cold. |
I have a classic with an 80hp.
After several years of experimentation I have settled upon a cowl flap/exit air
restrictor and, most important, a Laminova water-oil heat exchanger.
The cowl flap keeps the coolant temperature under control (210-220F) and the heat
exchanger keeps the temps in lockstep in cruise. In climb, the oil temp stabilizes
at 15-20degF over coolant temp. (I attribute this to heat load in the
gearbox.)
If you Choose the Laminova, get the largest of the 3 standard sizes. It will not
overcool.
(I started with the smallest, moved to the medium and had to install a coolant
restrictor to force more coolant through the heat exchange section)
They are not returnable so go for the big one, its not a great deal lerger or more
expensive.
In descent temps go to 170-180F. Cowl flapp closed.
It has been a lot of work, but I love my Laminova. I am in Vermont currently,
with surface temperatures in the 20-25F range. (-5C)
Warmup is a bit quicker, too.

Subject: | Re: Possible Leaking Fuel Tank! |
This is an update on my fuel leak for anyone who is interested.
At the weekend an LAA Inspector went to my aircraft and as a result of his investigation,
he discovered that the Fuel Pipe from the Starboard Sump to the Starboard
Fuel Drain had literally disintegrated at a point where there was an elbow
in the pipe. He described the pipe as having gone very soft, so soft it had
the consistency of Spaghetti & there was a hole in it, through which you could
stick your finger!
My next task is to replace all the Fuel & Coolant Pipes because they haven't been
replaced since aircraft was built 10 years ago.
Since my aircraft has a 914 engine there is more pipe work than in a 912S.
Has anyone replaced all the Fuel Pipes in a 914 and if so, would you have a detailed
description of the easiest way to go about the task?
Thanks to all who responded to my original query and to those who may respond again.
Regards and Happy New Year to everyone.

Hi James
You only have an extra oil line to the turbo so it's virtually the same job
as a 912.
Make sure you get some long reach pipe clamp wrench. It makes the job much
easier.
[X]
Also don't be afraid to remove the intake manifolds of the top of the engin
e. They are sealed by rubber o rings so no gaskets to worry about.
Good luck.

At the weekend an LAA Inspector went to my aircraft and as a result of his
investigation, he discovered that the Fuel Pipe from the Starboard Sump to
the Starboard Fuel Drain had literally disintegrated at a point where there
was an elbow in the pipe. He described the pipe as having gone very soft,
so soft it had the consistency of Spaghetti & there was a hole in it, throu
gh which you could stick your finger!
My next task is to replace all the Fuel & Coolant Pipes because they haven'
t been replaced since aircraft was built 10 years ago.
Since my aircraft has a 914 engine there is more pipe work than in a 912S.
Has anyone replaced all the Fuel Pipes in a 914 and if so, would you have a
detailed description of the easiest way to go about the task?
Thanks to all who responded to my original query and to those who may respo
nd again.
Regards and Happy New Year to everyone.
James

Chris,
Check your static probe under the wing still has the black plug in place , can
get knocked of easily, result is ineffective asi ... ( you need a pressure differential
and this effectively cancels it out ) ..symptom is taxi test that shows
extreme asi lag ..
disconnecting static line restores asi ... ( removes the balancing air stream )
...
Slight air leaks in asi feed do not create the same ( massive ) effect.
The actual flow when you try to blow through is also relatively high resistance
in normal operation .

I believe I have a leak in the pitot tube system. Pitot and static lines
passing through the fuselage to the instrument panel seem to be made of semi-opaque
hard plastic tubing approx 7.5mm OD and use 'push-fit' connectors. An adaptor
connects the push-fit connector to standard ?6mm flexible clear tubing
to the flight instruments.

tubing and push-fit connectors? Many thanks, Chris
