I am trying to do something that would appear quite simple, connect the UMA tachometer specifically sold for the Rotax 914, to this engine. The UMA "Manual" is toilet paper at best with the cryptic note "Connect the signal wire of the tachometer to one of the wires from the output coil/pickup, and connect the other wire from the output coil/pickup to the same ground point used by the tachometer. The Rotax install manual appears to be translated from Latin and states (I am not making this up) "Feeding wiring to electric rev counter from the 36 pole receptacle of TCU - connections: flexible wire 0,75mm2 (18AWG) white No.26* and flexible wire 0,75mm2 (18AWG) white No.13*. Now, I used to do electronics as a teenager, so this should be easy, but it seems both manufacturers have written instructions to keep avionics technicians in a job - this is cryptic at best. The UMA tach did not even come with any wires, just a dismantled plug and the Rotax 914 TCU has umpteen white only wires coming out of it... Has anyone actually managed to do this without expert help and can explain to me in plain english. Thank you so much Regards Trevor Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=501334#501334 ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 03:05:27 AM PST US Subject: Re: Europa-List: Re: arplast pv 50 From: Ken Atkinson Hi Matt, Arplast PV50 bearings. My last replacements were from ---www.simplybearings.co.uk---- 3 off MB.5040.DLU---Wrapped steel plain bearing bush 50x55x40mm 3off 51110.MB ----thrust ball bearing 50x70x14mm 2off 3x5o.NBR- pack of 2-----3section x50mmbore NITRILE 70 0-rings Simply have a good website and do a quick delivery. This is how I service my PV50.- First get your inspector present! and read PV50 manual. I have a 4ft square of 1/2 inch ply with a 2" hole cut in the centre -screwed to a B/D workmate. Remove propeller noting spinner and backplate alignement markings- take photos. Place propeller on bench with pitch change motor in hole. Remove 6 Hub bolts, use a 9volt PP9 battery to touch on pitch change motor to move blades to coarse then lift off top of hub.It helps to have another set of hands and eyes to achieve this carefully. The blades can be lifted out if the pitch change motor has been moved coarse enough. Work on one blade at a time, make a simple jig from wood to hold the blade. Mine is a piece of shelf 23"x 8"with a piece of 4x1.5" fixed either end.Back of blade rests on one end while the bearing sits in a V cut at the other end. At the hub end is fixed a metal bar with a hole to locate the bolt head of the nylon block mounting. All the blades should fit the jig accurately before dismantling! Undo hub clamp and remove thrust and plain bearing and o ring, clean and inspect. Note centre holes of thrust bearings are different, smaller dia centre locates on propeller shaft last.larger dia centre locates in hub. Fit new o ring and bearings with grease.Clean loctite from clamp and bolts. Fit blade to jig, refit clamp and tighten bolts with loctite applied. You can keep rechecking your jig by trying the old blades in! Repeat for blades 2 and 3 .Refit as manual, loctite on bolts at 11 lbs/ft. Don't forget to pull on blades, to seat the thrust bearings, when tightening! Before reassembling check the mechanical fine pitch stop.It is an aluminium tube fitted over the screw actuator with an o ring! This is the safety device in case of screw, switch or other failure. It's length governs the max revs at take off in the event of one of the above. See latest LAA info. All above is just from memory so I may have missed some parts or they may be in the wrong order but I hope it helps. Peter will have much more experience of many PV50s and may wish to add to my comments? Cheers Ken. should fit jig well before any dismantling! A blocking front will hamper those flying down. There will be times and corridors for flying VFR and it won't be pretty until a bit later in the week. I personally won't expose N12AY to Sunday's inch of rain, miserable high winds and potential tent flying. I'm not going to expose myself to setting tenting up in the rain either. So. setup will be a challenge. My electrical woes on 12AY aren't solved but the good news is the stator seems fine and, replacing the regulator and checking wires continues. That means I'll pull the wings and trailer N12AY over on Monday afternoon or evening. Monday's setup will be a mess of tractor trailers, carts everywhere and cleanup from the previous day. I'll play it by ear. It may be my advancing years, experience, or laziness but I think even I will look at a more cautious and perhaps slower setup. Even if the plane doesn't get there until Wednesday, that is fine with me. We'll have a tent for cover, a place to sit, advertising out, and watch and enjoy the other Type A's scramble around in the mud and work around the clock. Tuesday, I'll work on my tan, make a must have buy list, and meet and greet. I'll enjoy seeing folks, attending gatherings and try to spread cheer for a week. Be safe in your travels and plan accordingly. We'll be here to welcome you to Sun 'n Fun. It's nice down here but you have to get here from there. Heck getting 12AY the 5 miles from Plant City Airport to Lakeland may have to be by road. My freshly top overhauled engine is leaking oil from the turbo components like rain. I'm throwing time and parts at that now. The last oil leak is at the oil catch can area under the turbo (which is wet between the split also) and believe it or not, my hose from the turbo outlet to the manifold is full of oil and leaking. What a mess. Hopefully, I can troubleshoot that and find a less costly fix than I fear the symptoms are leading to. On top of that, although all went extremely well during high power flight test climbs, stalls, cruise and engine data checks I did some touch and goes and after a short/soft field full stop landing, I was feeling good on taxi back then I find the voltage down to 12 and the amps at -2 at idle power. It never does that. It is always 13 minimum and slightly positive. I ran it up to 2500 and the voltage rose a bit as did the amps indicating there is some life there. Then I saw a small pool of oil under the turbo. Either the voltage regulator has failed (I just put that on in 2007) or my stator has died (I repaired that in 2006). Frankly a 14 year old part on a 20 year old engine should last forever don't you think? Except it is an airplane of course. So back to the airport in the morning to pull the cowl, test the stator, replace the regulator, and find the oil leak and hopefully fix it for sure. Backup plan is load the plane on the trailer and haul it as time is growing short. Life is an adventure, and I'm up for it. Bud and Anita Yerly Custom Flight Creations, Inc. Connect one of these wires to a good earth point and the second wire to the Signal input on the gauge. The other two connections on the gauge are for positive supply and earth. Now I will also add that instead of taking the wire from the engine to earth, I take it straight to the earth connection on the gauge which is also separately earthed. The reason I do this is that I have done several of these and on one installation I ended up with erratic readings and the fix turned out to be reversing the two wire connections from the back of he engine.
