Subject: | Gearbox dog wear (pockets) and Warpdrive props? |
So, my resonance issue at cruise (5krpm) has been narrowed down to the
gearbox dogs, and a worn spot at either end of the dog as felt during a
recent friction test. Thx to Chris on this list for the heads up! I
verified the torsional resonance issue using the very well engineered
SmartAvionics PB40 dynamic balancer with multiple axis measurement.
Rotax is suggesting that this pocket-wear can be induced from low friction
torque (which I have since my box rebuild by the certified rotax depot :-/
not impressed) and/or the warp drive having too high a rotating mass. The
latter brings up the obvious question: since the warp-drive has been the
default for the europa prior to the more recent blade choices, how many
others in the fleet (or any other fleet for that matter), have had similar
gearbox issues with the short 65" three blade WD's?
It's looking like I may now have to dish out $5000 in gearbox parts to
replace the dogs (gear-set + clutch I'm told). What a waste of $$ - was
planning on an autopilot and airmaster...... ain't gonna happen now.
Cheers and thx for any data,
Pete

Now with a gearbox longevity vs prop dilemma, I'm wondering if the lighter
composite blades made for the airmaster will also fit into the WD prop hub
(as a stopgap measure to not destroy another gearbox, and still keep the
lottery option open for an airmaster hub down the road)?
Cheers and thx,

Pete, Sorry to hear about the possible expense (I know the feeling). You can thank
Phil Lockwood for that hint. He told me it is a very common issue if the gearbox
is old, and not properly rebuilt. Low friction torque? Dunno. I was always
told that if your gearbox has low friction you can easily tell (very noisy).

Hi Roger,
For your information only, I replaced all the header flanges of the original
Europa Classic Exhaust with the stronger recommended Rotax flanges that fit
into the cylinder heads. They came with the engine. The Europa flanges were
of poor quality and didn=99t fit well.
Local engineer did it. Where are the cracks occurring?
Will venture over to the motherland soon and may be able to catch up with a p
int?
Cheers,
Tim

Hi Chris,
My FT is at the lower limit, but isn't noisy fwiw.
Such is life when buying a used aircraft - one never knows the true service
history - always full of unanticipated surprises ;-) For a personality
type such as mine, it's killer. More motivation to get my 20+year old kit
bits finally into formation with new bits (and cross my fingers lol)....
it's gonna happen. really. :-)
Thanks again!
Pete
PS - WD couldn't tell me their moment of inertia, but I just tripped on a
rotax service bulletin which lays out a simple hanging string test to
determine.... guess what I'll be doing tomorrow morning ;-)

Great tip - thx Tim!
After three TIG repairs on my classic (approaching the 500hr mark), next
time I will do the same!

Subject: | Re: Arplast Propeller problems |
Further to my previous post concerning the Arplast PV50 Propeller and Controller.
I was advised to contact Mark Burton of Smart Avionics to learn of a small
hardware alteration that had been found to extend the life of the Electric Motor.
With his permission, I have copied his response below.
"What I have recommended in the past is to add a 2 ohm resistor into the
wire from the the controller to the PV-50 motor to limit the current
surge when the controller starts the motor moving which should reduce
the chance of the motor burning out. The easiest place to install the
resistor is near the bracket on the back of the gearbox as you show in
the photo. Here's a link to a suitable resistor.
https://uk.farnell.com/arcol/hs10-2r-f/resistor-wirewound-2r-1-solder/dp/2678652?st=hs10
I like this type of resistor as it is very sturdy and the unlikely to
fail. A lot of resistors have relatively feeble wires. Mounting is not
critical at all.
It's worth noting that Arplast themselves recommended fitting a
resistor after they became aware that I was advocating doing that."

The airmaster hubs mostly use whirlwind blades which have quite a unique shaft
profile.
What happened to your airmaster hub Peter?

The warpdrive blades work great and are the heaviest of all composites; (they are
did composite, heavy) Bolly blades on the other hand are one of the lightest
and share the same shaft profile; so interchangeable and your easiest solution.
