From: "JDA" My rear wing pin (wing root, near trailing edge) has a tiny amount of play, as if it is rocking within its thread. It also rotates a few degrees either side of vertical. The pin should be held within its threads by Redux 420 or Loctite 243: perhaps rigging forces have disturbed this bond? As far as I can determine, the surrounding wing reinforcing structure is sound. For info, I have the original classic foam wings, and have both Mod 52 (gross weight increase) and Mod 74 (rear wing attachment reinforcement) embodied. Mod 74 calls for a washer and nyloc nut to be fitted to the rear of the pin: this makes pin removal impossible short of digging into the wing itself to access the nut. However, this suggests to me that the pin is still able to withstand the drag and anti-drag forces. Questions: do others have similar play in the wing pins? Is it acceptable? Any repair ideas? Yes. Indeed i brought this up a couple years ago and had determined that tolerance stackups in the pin/receptacle assembly results in this play. I measured and tried both my existing classic era and newer xs kit assemblies. All had the play. I also got a quote from Europa for some custom mfg assemblies, but at $1000 i opted to live with the play. I have been flying for almost four years with the static tubing disconnected from the probe and just lying in the wing so there is no real urgency to fix the problem. My main reason for wanting to return the static probe to standard is based more on aesthetics than practicality. Finally, a friend offered to turn up a new one for me from aluminium so I thought it best to have it the proper dimensions so that I can use it if I decide to go that way. Thanks again and cheers Kingsley ________________________________ Message 4 _____________________________________ Time: 02:03:42 PM PST US From: MIKE CHRISTINE DUANE Subject: Re: Europa-List: What did you do with your Europa this week 8/19 - 8/26 Good morning Jim, Well, this is the time of year I pull Eddie off the airport for her annual inspection. I figure it gives her a break from the heat and the monsoon storms. So far, all looks good. Just some typical maintenance issues, adding some ideas I got from Forum (adding spacers to stand off the D window for better air circulation), and cleaning all the things that get dirty. I did find two small delam bubbles, one trailing edge mid wing and the other on a leading edge of a stabilator. So Ill see about fixing these. Other than that, just keeping busy. One funny note: the wife and I just got back from a few weeks on a travel trailer trip (cant say RV trip because some might think Ive traded planes) and during the trip I got the chance stop at the famous Leadville airport we all grew to love during our flight training. Pattern altitude of 11,000 feet is inspiring. And it was almost 90F that day. Talk about density altitude! The wife was getting a headache from the thin air so I can just imagine an engine trying to suck in enough air and the wings clawing for the sky on takeoff. In my case I broke the static tip in the hangar and the piece was embedded in my skull so no need to make a new tip (well, just kidding, the piece was in the floor). The fix was simple, the ID of the tip was exactly 1/8". Just ordered a hobby grade 1/8" OD brass tube, cut a small section and press fit into what is left of the plastic tip inside the pitot tube assembly and then press fit the black tip making sure not to block the holes. I did add a drop of CA glue but probably not doing anything. It is nice and tight though. I wholeheartedly agree with Bud in that it would be wise to have a spare of some kind or make it easy to vent to the cockpit. One day I experimented with venting inside the cockpit and did not notice a difference with the outside vent. For those leaving the static in the wing, I have found it is a crap shoot on how static the inside of the wing is. The fuselage (behind the panel) seems to work best for an alternate static source. With terror ready and waiting for the europa's left jive party trick it never got close to showing up.... no longer hesitant toward operating off tarmac; all the attentive practice, instructor type training and command time has delivered results... brought 181 down over the keys for a great landing and used the remaining 1200m of road to review competence at flying the wings on the ground and keeping centreline... did the same while backtracking for takeoff; rollout and unstick lasted less than 100m, then a minute later 181 was departing overhead at 1500' above the field.
