Thanks Chris,
I heard from Gary Roberts here in Tucson and he had one that he generously gave
to me.
Ron Parigoris had also suggested the Europa site. I hadn't known about the difference
in the manuals-the XS manual mentions it but doesn't include the instructions
on how to make it.
Thanks for helping track down a solution,
Dan

Subject: | Re: The Obsidian Files - Doorly Departed |
After some further real world feedback on this some more trials were run at 36m/sec
(70kt) velocity; simulating loosing a door just after take off... and the
simulation matched the real world account of sedate level of turbulence and acoustic
noise within the cockpit.
The velocity within the cockpit is only around 5m/sec, and acoustic noise about
60db... the swirl is also very sedate; so no real tendency for maps or the chihuahua
to be disturbed at all... so while flying faster improves the flow of
air over the fuselage within the simulation, flying slower results in an overall
more comfortable experience.
>From here we can move forward into Transient Time Based analysis in which the
active physical departure of the door is simulated through both time and space
to help predict the risk of impact with the rearward section of the airframe.

Dan,
Along with the basic fabrication of the throttle, the build information in
the manual is scant on the actual geometry you should strive for in the thr
ottle box as far as the cable end mounting, clearances, the hardware, stops
, etc. Running the cables had many frustrated builders spending hours modi
fying cables. I chose to keep things stock and learn from others how to pr
operly run the carb and later the choke cables. I'm attaching my pdf info
on the throttle and choke mods and techniques I have used. Keeping the cab
les from kinking is explained in the Etiquette file.
The T handle on the choke, the adjustable idle stop and 914 100% detent on
the throttle are favorites of those who fly my plane. For cross country fl
ying the cockpit accessible (lever in my case) throttle friction is quite h
andy.
Best Regards,
Bud Yerly

The issue with the choke is that you have to hold it out an annoyingly
small knob while manipulating throttle, brake and pressing starter. And
in florida with sweaty fingers.
Bud of course has the perfect solution.
A heath Robinson solution is a half inch "bulldog" clip (spring paper clip
thingy) round the base of the choke handle shaft. This will hold the
choke open and once the engine starts you simply push the choke in.

Will,
I never have the choke out more than a second after start. Maybe it is the
AVGas and I don=92t fly on really cold days (well for Florida).
If it is really cold even when test flying up north I never had the choke o
ut very long. But that little knob is pretty pathetic. Pulled it right of
f and flew the plane with a Vise-Grip on the choke.

Subject: | The Obsidian Files - Speed Kit |
The Speed Kit has been an interesting study and has seen the resolution of our
test environment cranked up from medium to fine... as a result solution times
have somewhat quadrupled however the real world accuracy is now around 95% as
opposed to 90% and earlier results are now superseded from a guidance qualitative
level to a more advisory level.
Several variations were examined, being, Clean Plug (baseline), Speed Kit (factory),
Partial Kit (outrigger cowl only), Alternative (known custom outrigger cowl
only)... Velocity of 51m/s and Attitude of 0deg was used across all tests.
Results: Drag (kg) / Lift (kg)
Clean Plug - 43.7 / 426.1
Speed Kit - 57.2 / 432.9
Partial - 56.3 / 434.2
Alternate - 55.8 / 433.9
Initial shared thoughts regarding the effectiveness of fitting the speed kit were
supported using a courser resolution for the above and presented a broad contrast
of results of some 8kg of drag in favour of no speed kit being used; so
as a qualitative measure the mathematical resolution was pushed until more accurate
and stable results were achieved.
The Alternate cowl provides a more streamlined flow and lower Acoustic levels and
although the differences are minor, across the entire airframe, every little
bit adds up.
The conclusion we can assume on this subject is that the factory Speed Kit consumes
speed!
