Thanks for the info Jim; yes fitted Matco friction blocks... I put the new rivets
as the old ones were fitted, and points noted. Might get another set of rivets
and redo them. It's not a big job to R&R.

Thanks for the info Jim; yes fitted Cleveland Parker friction blocks... I put the
new rivets as the old ones were fitted, and points noted. The catalogue shows
rivet orientation as you mention. Might get another set of rivets and redo
them. It's not a big job to R&R.

I should also add that the Europa manual calls for 18 psi in the tire. That is
quite low and if you are doing multiple landings (for example training), heat
will build up and the tube will fail, especially if you are operating on pavement.
It is much better to run at 26 to 28 psi. This isn't difficult on grass runways,
but on pavement, the tire will not grip as well as at lower pressures so there
is a tendency to lose directional control. You have to develop the skills
to control the direction of the plane on the ground with the rudder.
An aid I was shown, is to sit in the seat as normal and have an assistant measure
the distance from the center of the plane to your nose. Transfer this to a
mark on the windshield. I use a small triangle mark so the bottom of the triangle
is aligned with the end of the runway and the top of the triangle is the
distance from the centerline of the airplane. I use this on landing and find
it really helps, especially since my left eye is dominate so I need the assistance
to look down the runway instead of over the cowl.
Just my experience.

Subject: | Re: First long trip |
Apologies for the late reply Dwayne.
The longest leg was 3 hrs and around 337 NM straight line distance from 7FL6 to
KMGM. Flight distance was probably longer because I remember having to go around
weather and airspaces. And I remember we had some headwind. I normally plan
for 135 kts TAS (5050-5100 RPM) and it has shown to be quite accurate.
After that leg my wife and I realized that we really didn't enjoy being up in the
airplane that long (the Europa is a wonderful airplane but not necessary the
comfiest on long trips, at least not mine). It also becomes a bit unpleasant
in turbulence and I wanted my wife to enjoy this trip. But to be honest, the
limiting factor was our bladders more than anything. So we kept the rest of the
legs to within 2(ish) hours and morning flights. But visiting places along the
way was part of the adventure.
We certainly enjoyed the trip and looking forward to our next Europa adventure.
Chris
