Subject: | Re: How to replace 912uls starter motor |
Hi All,
Well it turned out that I didn't have the XS firewall forward in my Classic which
meant that the starter could not be removed without swinging the engine forward
a couple of inches. To get access to engine bolts I had to remove the air
box, swing the carbs aside, remove coolant radiator, drop the exhaust, remove
right hand rear cylinder head coolant elbow and intake manifold. Hours of fun!
The swap out was easy enough. Then more fun putting everything back together.
The good news is it was just the starter motor. The brushes were shot which led
to damage of the commutator segments. A timely service and 30 brush replacement
would have saved a lot of pain. The starter had 20yrs service and just over
800hrs of use.
If you have an old one, I recommend a precautionary service this winter.
Thanks again for all the responses. It is very reassuring that there are people
out there willing to share their knowledge.
