<<swinging the engine forward...>> Did that mean removing just the bottom two engine
mounting bolts, or just the top two, or all four bolts?

meant that the starter could not be removed without swinging the engine forward
a couple of inches. To get access to engine bolts I had to remove the air
box, swing the carbs aside, remove coolant radiator, drop the exhaust, remove
right hand rear cylinder head coolant elbow and intake manifold. Hours of fun!

to damage of the commutator segments. A timely service and 30 brush replacement
would have saved a lot of pain. The starter had 20yrs service and just over
800hrs of use.

All four bolts! Realigning the engine to get the bolts back in was the biggest
challenge.
Because of the situation I was in I had to do this without help. Not recommend.
