Hi Weav. Only one of the seminars will have its main focus on an
alternative engine. Steve's talk is mainly on building and flying the
Defiant. Bob thought this would also be an good opportunity to have an
additional discussion and comparison on Subaru vs Lycoming power, and I
agreed. The Defiant is a good subject for this discussion since it has
both a tractor and a pusher installation. And how will we know when
these alternative engines have reached reliability and performance
acceptable to us if we don't have an opportunity to listen to these guys
and ask questions periodically to see how things are developing?
And while these engines are a long way from demonstrating the
reliability of certified engines, I don't think the situation is as bad
as you implied. I have spoken to two VariEze builders, one Cozy
builder, and two RV builders who use Subaru's and they are all
relatively happy with their Subaru installations, though some certainly
had more debugging to do than with certified engines.
Every year I put out a call for seminar topics for this fly-in. I will
be glad to try and obtain speakers for the topics that are of greatest
interest to attendees.

Joel... I hate to be that guy that pours saltwater on the
presentations...... And I mostly identify with Varieze's and Long
Ez's... The Defiant sorta provides a little leeway with respect to
engine failures given you have two of them. You guys are probably on the
right track. I just have a lot of hours in 0-200 ez's and 0-235/0-320
Long Ez's and have some personal viewpoints. Honestly, the 0-320 really
makes one helluva nice airplane out of a Long Ez. The 0-235 was great
for LONG distances but would really hug the ground for quite a ways when
loaded. The 0-360 is plenty of power but it doesn't buy much speed, only
rate of climb. Whatever and wherever the Subaru can fit in, good luck
to all. I like the Subaru engines.. Just don't know how they actually
work out in the aviation vein that you guys are trying to fit them in
on. I hope you are all successful with your installations and testing. I
just couldn't afford the time and money to allow for failure. So much
work to do behind that firewall.........
Thanks Joel,
Weav
