Is it hard to get the strut apart?  I have no idea how.

Yes  I have installed the reinforcing  rings.  Made them a little thicker and 
wider in hopes of shrinking, but it didn't.  But it did round up the socket 
which was several thousands egg shaped, so I got rid of one problem at least.
